HUNTINGTON BEACH – The Ocean View boys basketball team beat Garden Grove 74-68 Friday to win its fifth consecutive Golden West League championship.
The win was the 43rd consecutive in the Golden West League for the Seahawks.
League titles are familiar for No. 24 Ocean View, but it is the first for first-year head coach Jimmy Harris.
Harris was an All-County basketball player for the Seahawks and is the son of legendary Ocean View coach Jim Harris, who was the head coach at Ocean View for 33 years until he passed away in 2011.
There is a picture of Jim Harris, who Jimmy refers to as “the chef,” hanging in the Ocean View gym, which is named after him.
“The picture that’s over my shoulder up there, every time we are in here, it’s an honor,” Harris said. “To see these guys improve throughout the season, it’s exactly what ‘the chef’ would always be cooking up. That’s what he would always do.”
Ocean View (18-8, 8-0) got a spectacular shooting performance from senior Vincent Caiazzo, who made 7 of 9 3-point attempts and scored a team-high 22 points.
“We needed every single one of those threes,” Harris said. “He has been the glue. Tonight was a huge night for him.”

“I know I can catch fire like that. It feels really good,” Caiazzo said. “Once I knocked down a couple early, I figured I’ll just keep letting it fly and see what happens and it worked out for me.”
Seniors Kurtis Vu and Carson Nguyen each scored 19 points for Ocean View. Nguyen scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and Vu scored eight.
“Carson has been unbelievable for the last two weeks,” Harris said. “It was nice to see those three guys attack the rim, with spacing and play with each other against a really good team.”
Garden Grove (21-4, 6-2) rebounded well, but couldn’t overcome its 15 turnovers. Sebastian Castro scored 23 points for the Argonauts and Jerry Martinez scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Andres Ortega had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Garden Grove.
Ocean View will win the outright league championship if it beats Godinez on Tuesday.
Garden Grove can clinch second place in the Golden West League if it beats Segerstrom on Tuesday. The Argonauts can also win a share of the league championship if they win their final two games and Ocean View loses its last two games.
