COSTA MESA – The Costa Mesa boys basketball team beat Santa Ana 75-64 on Tuesday to win the Orange Coast League championship.
The title is the first for Costa Mesa since 2006 and is the first outright league championship for boys basketball in school history.
“The goal coming in was we want to win this league,” Costa Mesa coach Mike Ofer said. “First time doing it by ourselves and we knew we had nine seniors to do it. It’s a huge relief.
“It’s hard to win a league championship. Our kids stepped up. Everybody from our stars to our bench.”
Osman Hefner scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Mustangs. He scored 11 points in the third quarter and made two 3-pointers.
“He is the most interesting player I’ve ever coached,” Ofer said. “Sometimes you have to let him do his thing. He made some outstanding layups and made some big 3-point shots. We needed him making those plays tonight.”
Tre Villalpando was the catalyst for Costa Mesa on both sides of the floor. Villalpando filled the stat sheet with 21 points, six assists, six rebounds and six steals.
“Every time I looked at him he said, ‘Coach I am so tired,’ and I asked if he wanted a sub and he said he didn’t need it,” Ofer said of Villalpando. “He and the rest of the team gave me everything they had tonight.”
Costa Mesa (14-11, 8-1) has no players over 6-foot-1 in its rotation. Ethan Elliot and George Williamson played like big men Thursday, grabbing 11 and 9 rebounds, respectively. Elliot also added 11 points.
“I’ve never seen them do that in my life. They played their butts off,” Hefner said. “I’m happy they stepped up to help win the biggest game of the year.”
Santa Ana (13-13, 6-3) cut the Costa Mesa lead to three points in the fourth quarter.
The Saints struggled in the second quarter, turning the ball over seven times and being outscored 26-12.
Jesus Silva scored 26 points and had five steals for Santa Ana.
