IRVINE – Northwood named Paige Nobles as the new head coach of its football team Tuesday during a meeting with the team’s returning players.

Nobles replaces Pete Mitchell who stepped down after the 2018 season. Mitchell was the Timberwolves’ coach for two seasons.

Nobles, 49, was an assistant coach on Mitchell’s staff in 2018. He served as the special teams coordinator, defensive line coach and running backs coach.

“I am beyond excited. Getting this opportunity after only coaching at Northwood for a season means the world to me,” Nobles said. “This is a special place with amazing kids, staff, admin, parents and boosters. They made me feel right at home from the very first time I was on campus.”

Prior to coaching at Northwood, Nobles was an assistant coach at Laguna Beach for John Shanahan and an assistant coach at Aliso Niguel for Kurt Westling.

Northwood had an 8-4 overall record in 2018 with a 3-2 record in the Pacific Coast League. The Timberwolves beat Rancho Alamitos in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 12 playoffs before losing to Laguna Beach in the second round.

“We are going to continue with the success from last season and get that ring Northwood deserves,” Nobles said. “We are going to be a no-huddle, fast-paced team.”

Woodbridge won the Pacific Coast League in 2018 after the departure of Corona del Mar, which had won the league eight consecutive seasons. Northwood finished second place in the Pacific Coast League in 2018 after having a 1-4 league record in 2017.
