GARDEN GROVE – For three quarters, the Garden Grove League boys basketball finale between Bolsa Grande and La Quinta on Thursday was a track meet, with neither team able to pull away.
In the fourth quarter, it appeared to come down to conditioning.
The Aztecs went on a 16-0 run that began late in the third quarter and cruised to a 69-53 victory in a loud La Quinta High gym.
The victory gave the Aztecs (13-13, 8-2) a share of the league title with Santiago (18-8, 8-2), which defeated Los Amigos 61-39 on Thursday.
The Aztecs and Cavaliers split their two games in league, with each team winning on its home court.
La Quinta will go into the CIF Southern Section playoffs as a first-place in Division 4A and Santiago will go as a first-place team in Division 4AA.
The score Thursday was tied after the first and second quarters and late into the third, but at that point the Aztecs took total control.
Bolsa Grande (14-12, 6-3) went close to six minutes without scoring and managed only six points in the fourth quarter.
“I think we are in really good condition,” Aztecs coach Mark Sanchez said. “I didn’t think we would be because we play about six or seven guys.”
The Matadors had no way of containing La Quinta’s 6-foot-5 center Michael Nadeau, who led all players with 36 points and 13 rebounds.
Nadeau hit four 3-pointers, creating even more problems for the Matadors because of his ability to hit from outside.
“The three-ball is definitely a difference maker,” said Nadeau, who is also the quarterback for the Aztecs football team. “If I can get that going, down low is easy after that. I had both going today.”
Both teams shot well from behind the arc.
Brandon Lai scored 13, including two 3-pointers to lead the Matadors who hit five 3-pointers as a team.
The Aztecs’ Anthony Nguyen hit four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
