Saturday

DOWN THE STRETCH
• John Sadler bid farewell to Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Accelerate early Sunday morning with a pat on the neck before heading home. The 2018 Horse of the Year runner-up finished third in the final race of his career, the Pegasus World Cup, before heading to Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky to begin his breeding career. “It’s like sending your kid off to college,” Sadler told Gulfstream Park publicity. “We’ll see him in Kentucky, so it’s not like he’s going far. Hopefully, we’ll be back there and see him soon.” Accelerate was voted top older dirt male when the Eclipse Awards were announced on Jan. 24.
• The Bob Baffert-trained Mucho Gusto is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s Grade III Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita. The Lewis, one of the major prep races for the Santa Anita Derby, drew a field of six, which also includes Sham Stakes winner and 9-5 second choice Gunmetal Gray. “Mike (jockey Mike Smith) told me Gunmetal Gray can run as far as they can run,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “I hope he’s right.” Gunmetal Gray rallied from seventh to win the Sham by a length despite racing four wide. Mucho Gusto has won two of three starts, including the Grade III Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 17.
• McKinzie, impressive winner of the opening-day Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita, will kick off his 4-year-old campaign as the 4-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s Grade II San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita. McKinzie won the Malibu by 4-3/4 lengths with a big rally from 10th in the 7-furlong race. McKinzie, a son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, has won 5 of 7 races lifetime for earnings of $1,086,000. He’ll be ridden by Smith, who has been aboard for all of his starts. Battle of Midway is the 5-2 second choice in the 1-1/8-mile race that serves as a steppingstone to the $500,000 Santa Anita Handicap.
