BOYS BASKETBALL
Monday’s basketball scoreboard
No. 11 Trabuco Hills beat Aliso Niguel 71-58 in a South Coast League game to put itself in position to play for a league championship. The Mustangs will host No. 18 Capistrano Valley for the outright league championship Wednesday. Kelvin Cabrera scored a game-high 24 points for Trabuco Hills and made six 3-pointers. Trevor Hotmer almost got his second consecutive triple-double with 14 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists. Aliso Niguel will wrap up its season against San Clemente Wednesday.
No. 13 Pacifica Christian played the role of spoiler by beating No. 9 Capistrano Valley Christian 56-52 to dash CVC’s San Joaquin League championship aspirations. If Capistrano Valley Christian beat Pacifica Christian, it would have been the Co-San Joaquin League champions with No. 10 Fairmont Prep. Pacifica Christian finished third place in the San Joaquin League standings. Luke Powell scored 19 points for the Eagles in the loss. Festus Ndumanya was limited to 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Tesoro coach Steve Garrett reached the 300 win milestone in the Titans’ 76-44 win over San Juan Hills in a Sea View League game at Tesoro High. Garrett has coached Tesoro for 17 of its 18 seasons as a varsity program. During his tenure the Titans have won 63 percent of their games, won six league championships and a CIF championship in 2009. Noah Honetschlager led Tesoro with 19 points and Tyler Broughton added 17.
GIRLS
Monday’s basketball scoreboard
No. 7 Orangewood Academy routed Sage Hill 65-37 in a San Joaquin League game to set up a league championship game. Orangewood Academy will play No. 5 Fairmont Prep Wednesday for a chance to share the league championship. Tarryn Ross scored a career-high 25 points for the Spartans in the win and Chelsea Caldera added 15 points. Sage Hill will finish the regular season Thursday against St. Margaret’s.
Santa Ana likely earned a share of the Orange Coast League championship by beating Costa Mesa 44-36 at Santa Ana High. Both teams are 8-1 in Orange Coast League play and have each beaten each other once. Santa Ana plays third place Saddleback Wednesday and Costa Mesa plays Estancia. If both teams win, they will share the Orange Coast League championship.
