Irvine police have arrested a 20-year-old man they say is tied to at least nine home burglaries since December.
Officers arrested Ismail Luqman Wasi of Irvine on Wednesday, Jan. 23, a few hours after he broke into a home on Gillman Street and fled when faced by a resident, Irvine police spokeswoman Kim Mohr said on Friday.
It was about 4:30 a.m. when a female resident was awakened by sounds coming from a nearby room. When she went to check, she found a man holding her laptop. He fled, and she called police.
After running away, Wasi broke into homes on nearby Dewberry Way and Sandburg Way, police said. Officers closed in on the suspect and just before 7:30 a.m., police said, spotted him and briefly chased him on foot before taking him into custody.
When arrested, he had on him property that he stole from the home on Gillman and some from another burglary in December at the San Leon Villa apartments, police said, adding that detectives later found that Wasi also had a storage unit containing stolen property.
Tens of thousands of dollars in property was recovered, Mohr said, adding that police were working to return it to the owners.
Residents were home during at least some of the incidents but there was never any confrontation. The suspect, police believe, was not armed.
“One of the things we want to highlight is that in these burglaries everyone’s doors were unlocked,” Mohr said. “It’s just a good crime-prevention method to lock your doors.”
Wasi was charged with nine felony counts, eight of them for burglary and one for attempted burglary, court records show. He pleaded not guilty.
Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact Detective Justin Brouwer at 949-724-7124 or at jbrouwer@cityofirvine.org.
