Christine Zeppos, a former dean at Brandman University who was terminated in August after making claims of harassment, has filed a lawsuit against the private Irvine college and its top two administrators.
In the lawsuit, filed in Superior Court on Monday, Jan. 14, Zeppos makes a number of claims against Chancellor Gary Brahm and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Chief Academics Officer Provost Charles Bullock, including sexual harassment, gender discrimination, retaliation, failure to prevent wrongful termination and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The two administrators “created a toxic, misogynistic fiefdom where they developed a ratified culture of gender-based harassment and discrimination against Brandman’s female employees and retaliated against any female employee who complained of the culture, including Dr. Zeppos,” the lawsuit states.
Zeppos seeks monetary damages and reinstatement.
University officials denied the allegations.
“Brandman University has always been deeply committed to providing an inclusive, welcoming environment for our students, staff and faculty, which emphasizes respect for all individuals regardless of race, gender, age, religion, sexual or gender orientation,” Brandman spokeswoman Roberta Dellhime said in a statement.
“We take any allegation contrary to this commitment extremely seriously, and categorically deny all allegations made in the civil action filed by Dr. Christine Zeppos,” Dellhime said. “While we will not comment specifically on ongoing litigation, we can confirm that the university’s decision to replace Dr. Zeppos as dean of our School of Education was based on a process that was both fair and thorough, and included an extensive, independent, third-party investigation of complaints made against Dr. Zeppos by two female employees. Dr. Zeppos’ refusal to accept the investigator’s findings or the corrective action designed to allow her to continue in her role resulted in the university’s decision to seek a new leader for its School of Education.”
Zeppos was hired as a professor and dean of education in 2010.
In September, hundreds of supports signed a petition on change.org to get Zeppos reinstated at Brandman, which is part of the Orange-based Chapman University system.
“Rather than keep silent, she (Zeppos) demonstrated what she and the program has taught all of us; courageous leadership means making the ultimate sacrifice, taking a stand and a risk,” states the petition, which was started by former and current students of Zeppos after she was fired from the university Aug. 17.
