Jessica Peterson, Centennial: Peterson averaged 15 points, 14.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in helping the Huskies win the Best of the West Tournament title last week at Ayala High School. She is averaging 11.4 points and 11.3 rebounds on the season.
Kristin Hanaoka, Peninsula: Hanaoka helped lead the Panthers to the championship of the NCAA Blue Division at the SoCal Prep Holiday Classic. She scored 21 points in the 51-49 win over Oak Ridge in the championship game. For the tournament, she averaged 19.5 points per game.
Tabitha LaParl, Los Alamitos: LaParl scored eight goals in five games last week, leading Los Alamitos to a championship in the Excalibur Tournament in the process. The sophomore scored in four of the five games, including a four-goal performance in a 7-1 win over Cypress. The Griffins, ranked as the No. 2 girls soccer team in the state by MaxPreps.com, went 4-0-1 last week to improve to 15-0-3 on the season.
Katie Gomez, Birmingham: Leon captured the 195-pound championship and was chosen the MVP of the upper-weight classes at Upland’s BlackWatch Tournament. Leon won all six matches via fall, with half of those pins being recorded in 40 seconds or less. Leon was the state’s No. 9-ranked wrestler at 195 pounds entering the tournament, but he should get a bump after pinning No. 5-ranked Callum Bisping at the 84-second mark of the championship match.
Jorday Holmes, Glendora: Holmes, who is considered one of the top guards in the area, had a huge week at the Glendora Tournament. She scored a team-high 16 points in Thursday’s 46-41 win over Summit and followed that up by tallying a season-high 26 points to lead the Tartans to a 59-55 win over Yucaipa in the semifinals. In their dramatic 51-50 win over Chino Hills in the final, Holmes pumped in 10 points and was named the tournament’s MVP.
