IRVINE – The Beckman boys basketball team outlasted Northwood in overtime Thursday to win its first outright Pacific Coast League championship in school history.

Trailing by three with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, Dylan Thoerner brought the ball up court and made a 3-pointer to tie the score for Beckman. It was the only 3-pointer the Patriots made in the game.

“He actually went in the exact spot I asked him to go to. He made the shot and we executed that, and executed defensively in the game,” Beckman coach John Goins said. “I’m going to miss him (Thoerner). He will make a bucket sometimes and I’ll think, ‘man, what am I going to do without him next year? What will I do without him for the rest of my life?’ ”

Beckman (19-8, 8-2) led by four at the end of the third quarter, but Northwood guard Shannon Sharifi scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to propel the Timberwolves to a three-point lead late. Sharifi scored a team-high 23 points for Northwood.

The Patriots outscored the Timberwolves 13-5 in overtime to put the game away. Thoerner scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and overtime for Beckman. Christopher Muller scored four of his 20 points in overtime.

A huge factor in Beckman’s success was forward Aaman Soma. Soma had a double-double for the Patriots with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Nearly half of Soma’s rebounds were offensive and 16 of his points were in the paint.

“He averaged nearly a double-double all year. He has a great relationship with Muller in that high-low action we do,” Goins said of Soma. “He finds the ball and finds the rim. Having that consistent low post threat who can rebound is nice.”

Beckman clinched a share of its first league championship in school history when it beat University on Tuesday. If the Patriots lost to Northwood (13-14, 6-4), the two schools would have shared the league title.

“We didn’t want to share anything. We were joking about how we didn’t want an asterisk next to anything,” Goins said. “We’ve done a good job staying focused when things get heated. We came into a tough environment tonight, set another goal and met it.”
