More stops for commuters using the iShuttle in Irvine

More routes have been added to the iShuttle that connects workers in Irvine with Metrolink stations.

The added routes are expanding the transit service, which is several years old, to more heavy-business areas in the city. An average of 500 people daily hop aboard the shuttle vans, which are meant to take them “the last mile” in their commute.

The vans, a partnership between the Orange County Transportation Authority and the city, make circular routes, one between the Irvine Station and the Irvine Spectrum and a second between the Tustin Metrolink Station and the Irvine Business Complex and John Wayne Airport. The two additional routes will have those same endpoints but will pick up passengers from different streets than are currently accessed.

Much of the shuttle use is by commuters taking trains into the area for work, but some Irvine residents catch the vans to get to the train stations to commute to their workplaces elsewhere, officials said.

“My commitment to reducing traffic is helped each workday with the longtime success of the iShuttle from our two stations,” Mayor Don Wagner said in a statement. “These two new routes will make the daily trips to and from numerous Irvine locations even more convenient.”

Taking the vans costs $1, but rides are free with a Metrolink or OCTA bus ticket. Payment is made at boarding and there is no need to sign up in advance.

Irvine pays nothing toward the service, which is funded with state transportation money.
