HUNTINGTON BEACH — For the Newport Harbor boys basketball team, it was a tale of two halves in the Surf League.
After dropping two of their first three games in league, the Sailors have turned it around, and they added to the turnaround with a 59-47 victory over Corona del Mar in a league tiebreaker game Thursday at Marina High School.
The game was needed because of the four-way tie for first place in the Surf League. The winner of Thursday’s two tiebreaker games received the league’s two guaranteed playoff spots.
The victory gave the Sailors (25-4, 4-3) a berth in the CIF-SS Division 2AA playoffs that start next week. The Sea Kings (18-10, 3-4) will need to receive an at-large berth to the playoffs or their season will be over.
Brackets for the playoffs will be announced Sunday at noon.

The victory was not only Newport Harbor’s second over the Sea Kings in two days, it was the exclamation point to the team’s turnaround in the second half of league play.
“Sometime teams go through peaks and valleys,” Newport Harbor coach Robert Torribio said. “We peaked a lot in the month of December, but we ran into some really good teams in January and they are all very well coached.
“I just like our guys’ response with their next-game, next-play mentality. Our guys have stuck to that all season.”

Dayne Chalmers led Newport Harbor with 18 points and seven rebounds while Sam Barela and Levi Darrow each scored 11 points for the Sailors.
Will Harvey scored seven points and dished out seven assists for the Sailors while Robbie Spooner added seven points for Newport Harbor.
“We just have to continue the way we are playing,” Chalmers said. “We have to keep scoring because our defense has been solid all year.”
