Troy girls basketball coach Roger Anderson had no problem Friday putting his young team’s selection to the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs into a perspective it could understand.

“We’re now in AP (advanced placement) basketball and these teams are loaded,” said Anderson, whose roster features several highly academic student-athletes. “It’s taking mid-terms and finals all at once.”

It was Troy’s inclusion in the elite field of eight teams for the Open Division that provided the drama for an announcement from the CIF-SS that otherwise went as expected.

The Warriors (22-6) were ranked ninth earlier this week in the section’s Division 1 poll. The poll included all the expected contenders from the Open Division watch list.

Troy jumped over No. 8 Serra and joined an Open Division that will include the top seven teams from that Division 1 poll: No. 1 Sierra Canyon, No. 2 Etiwanda, No. 3 and defending champion Windward, No. 4 Bishop Montgomery, No. 5 Redondo, No. 6 Mater Dei and No. 7 Rosary.

“I’m not surprised,” said Anderson, whose team beat Serra 60-52 on Jan. 2. “I know our kids are excited for the challenge because they love to compete.”

But for a coach who starts three freshmen, one sophomore and a junior, Anderson called the Open Division tournament “learning tools.”

“We have to learn how to compete and close out these games,” he said.

Only the teams for the Open Division and not the seeding were announced. The pairings will be released Sunday at noon.

Rosary (22-5) and Mater Dei (25-3) also have young teams but the Monarchs are familiar with the Open Division.

“We are excited about the opportunity to compete at such a high level,” said Rosary coach Rich Yoon, whose team was selected to the Open Division for the first time. “We are still working to be consistent … but are improving after every game.”

The Open Division will divide its field into two, four-team pools in a new format and pit the winners of each pool in the final on Feb. 23 at Cal Baptist.

If the seedings Sunday follow the rankings from earlier this week, Troy could find itself in a pool with Sierra Canyon while Trinity League rivals Mater Dei and Rosary will be in the other four-team pool. Mater Dei is 2-0 against Rosary this season, but both games were close.
