A showdown with an ex-teammate and a lofty, No. 2 seed highlighted the selection of nine Orange County girls basketball teams Sunday for the CIF State Southern California Regionals.

As expected, Mater Dei (27-4) earned an invitation to the Open Division but in a major plot twist, the No. 5 seed Monarchs drew host No. 4 Bishop Montgomery (23-6) and Khylee Pepe in the first round Wednesday at 6 p.m. Pepe, a sophomore, starred last season at Mater Dei.

Rosary (22-8), the Trinity League runner-up to Mater Dei, claimed the No. 2 seed to Cathedral Catholic in Division 1, which along with the other divisions begins Tuesday. The Royals play host to Narbonne (17-9).

Troy (22-9) earned the No. 6 seed in Division 1 and plays host to Lakeside (26-3), which captured the CIF-SS Division 2A title on Saturday against Oxford Academy.

For the second consecutive season, teams were slotted in regional divisions based on competitive equity.

Orange Lutheran (24-9), which won the CIF-SS Division 2AA crown on Saturday, grabbed the No. 4 seed in Division 2 to pace the county trio of No. 5 Oxford Academy (29-4) and No. 9 Santa Margarita (20-10).

Crean Lutheran (25-6) took the No. 11 seed in Division 4 while Anaheim (24-5) and Saddleback (18-12) are seeded fifth and 16th in Division 5. The Roadrunners play at top-seeded Madison (27-3) on Tuesday.
