HUNTINGTON BEACH – After dropping its first two meetings with Los Alamitos this season, the third time was the charm for Edison, as it defeated the Griffins  64-54 in a Surf League tiebreaker game Thursday night at Marina High School.

The victory clinched a guaranteed CIF Southern Section playoff berth for Edison (19-10, 4-3). Newport Harbor earned the league’s other guaranteed spot by defeating Corona del Mar in the other tiebreaker game Thursday.

The season is over for Los Alamitos (10-17, 3-4), which is ineligible for an at-large berth into the playoffs because of its sub-.500 record.

The playoff brackets will be released Sunday at noon and the playoff games start next week.

The Chargers dropped their second game to Los Alamitos this season on Wednesday night, which helped create the league’s four-way tie for first that included Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar, but they bounced back Thursday, as they relied heavily on their big three on offense.

Aiden Garnett led Edison with 22 points while Kaden Headington scored 20 points with six assists and Connor Collins added 13 points.

“Our teams has been getting us open and setting screens for us,” Garnett said. “We scored the majority because we hit our shots, but our whole team got us open and drawing the defense away so we can get open shots and attack the basket.”

Jack Horton scored seven points for Edison, which struggled Wednesday against the Griffins. The Chargers shook off the loss and went after Los Alamitos early.

“We came out and hit shots early,” Headington said. “We’ve been a little off lately. We came ready to play tonight. We got our shots and we made our shots. That was the biggest part of our game.”

The loss ends Los Alamitos’ season.

“It seems like the last two weeks have been games where we had to win if we wanted anything to happen,” Los Alamitos coach Eddie Courtemarche said. “We have been playing with our backs against the wall and we have been playing with a lot of pressure. We had a lot of weight on our shoulders. Unfortunately, the clock struck midnight and the magic ran out.”

David Olcomendy led the Griffins with 16 points while freshman Tyler Matthews added 10 points. Kevin Kent and Everett May each scored nine points for Los Alamitos.

The win Thursday could give Edison a boost of momentum as it heads into the tough Division 1 playoffs.

“I don’t know if you can in Division 1,” Edison coach Rich Boyce said as he laughed. “There are some pretty good teams in that Division.

“What we have to do is do the things that makes us the way we are. We have to play with heart, execute on offense, play great defense and hopefully that will be enough to carry us.”
