ANAHEIM – With the Orange League baseball title on the line, Katella played like it had been on the big stage before.

The Knights, who won a CIF-SS title in 2017, scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 10-1 victory over Savanna on Thursday evening at Boysen Park.

The victory gave Katella (17-8-2 overall, 13-2 in league) its fourth straight Orange League title and it avoided a three-way tie for the league title with Savanna (19-7, 11-4) and Century (19-6, 11-3), which could have sent the Knights into the playoffs as the league’s No. 3 representative due to coin flips.

Noah Walden helped the Knights avoid that scenario with three hits and five RBIs, including a two-RBI single during the first inning and a two-run double during a four-run fifth inning.

“We put in a lot of hard work,” Walden said. “We had to stay relaxed and not think too much of the pressure of getting into a three-way tie. We came together as one and we battled through it.”

The high-scoring first inning was more than enough for Katella pitcher Dustyn Burleson, who went six innings, allowed four hits and fanned five.

Savanna couldn’t figure out Burleson on the mound or at the plate, as he went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

“Our goal was to get that league championship,” Savanna coach John Baughman said. “It got down to the last game and it was on us. We could have showed up a bit better and ready to play. Unfortunately, it didn’t come out on our end.”

The Rebels scored their only run in the third inning thanks to a Miguel Martinez triple. Martinez scored on a groundout to first base by Saul Reynoso.

Katella knocked around Rebels pitcher Jesus Munguia in the fifth inning. The Knights put together four straight hits, including a two-run double by Noah Walden, to make it 7-1. They scored two more runs in the inning to lead 9-1 after five innings.

“We all bought in on doing our job,” Burleson said. “Everybody hit. The top half of the lineup got runners on for the bottom half. We went up and down in the lineup well tonight.”

Gonzalo Miranda went 1 for 2 with a double. Munguia went 1 for 3 with a double and pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Rebels, who will go into the playoffs as the league’s No. 3 representative.

The CIF-SS playoff brackets will be released Monday morning.

Katella will be at home for the first round of the Division 3 playoffs next week.

“We just have to do the best we can,” Katella coach Marcelo Miranda said. “When we find out who our opponent is, we’ll do some research. We just have to play Katella baseball.”
