The NFL draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant” is UCLA’s most relevant pick this year as tight end Caleb Wilson was UCLA’s only selection in the 2019 draft, waiting until the very last pick, No. 254 overall, to hear his name called.

The Arizona Cardinals picked up the former UCLA star one day after trading away former UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen.

Wilson, a redshirt junior who declared for the draft despite an extra year of eligibility, had 60 catches for 965 yards last year, marks that led the team and were the highest totals ever for a Bruin tight end. His 5.0 receptions per game and 80.4 receiving yards per game were also national highs for FBS tight ends. He was named a second-team All-American from Sporting News and CBS Sports and a first-team All-Pac-12 teamer, according to conference coaches and The Associated Press.

Although his production in the pass game was unparalleled at his position last year and the 6-foot-4, 240-pound prospect dazzled scouts at the NFL combine with the second-fastest 40-yard dash among tight ends, he was the 15th tight end taken in this year’s draft.

UCLA’s wait until the seventh round for its first draft pick was the program’s longest since 2009, when no Bruins heard their names called. The Bruins were closing in on only their sixth NFL draft shutout and just their third since 1943. The only other times UCLA went without a draft pick in the modern era were 1997 and 2009.
