Freshman Moses Brown and sophomores Jaylen Hands and Kris Wilkes are on the NBA’s list of early draft entrants, released by the league Tuesday.
Brown officially joins Hands and Wilkes, who both announced their intentions publicly weeks before the April 22 deadline. Brown, a 7-foot-1 freshman, averaged 9.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in his one season at UCLA, was voted to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team and named an All-Defensive team honorable mention.
Players can withdraw from the draft until 2 p.m. PT on June 10, but to maintain their college eligibility, players must inform the league and their schools’ athletic directors by May 29. Wilkes and Hands, who will go through the NBA draft evaluation for the second time this year after doing so as freshmen, have already stated their intentions to stay in the draft pool.
Brown was one of the top recruits in the country last year. Despite an up-and-down freshman year in which he flashed athleticism and an ability to run the floor well while also appearing to get overpowered by stronger post players, the New York City native has intriguing NBA size at 7-foot-1. He was also disciplined for being late to shootaround, missing all but five seconds of a home game against Utah in February, and then served another one-game suspension for violating athletic department policy late in the year.
With three players leaving to the NBA, UCLA now has an open scholarship spot for next year, the first for new head coach Mick Cronin. The Bruins already have two signees in guards Jake Kyman and Jaime Jaquez Jr.
