The CIF-Southern Section baseball playoff brackets will be released Monday.

The top three finishers in five- and six-team leagues earned guaranteed playoff berths. They are called “automatic qualifiers.” A team that did not finish high enough in its final league standings to get a guaranteed berth is a candidate for at-large berth consideration if it has an overall record of .500 or better.

All seven CIF-SS baseball playoff divisions will have 32-team brackets. If a division has more than 32 automatic qualifiers than wild card-round games will be played to reduce the division’s field to 32 teams for the first round.

At-large teams will be admitted in a division only if that division has fewer than 32 automatic qualifiers. The first .500-or-better teams admitted as at-large teams are teams that finished in its final standings one place below the final automatic qualifier position. If after that there still remain open berths in a division then the next-best .500-or-better teams can be placed into the bracket.

The playoffs begin with wild-card games in divisions that need them on Tuesday in Divisions 1, 3, 5 and 7 and in Divisions 4, 5 and 6 on Wednesday. First-round games are Thursday in Divisions 1, 3, 5 and 7 and on Friday in Divisions 2, 4 and 6.

Second-round games in all divisions are May 7, quarterfinals are May 10 and semifinals are May 14. No longer are the Division 1 semifinals played as a doubleheader.

CIF-SS baseball championship games are May 17 and 18. Some division finals are at Dodger Stadium, others at UC Riverside. Which divisions play where will be announced later.

Orange County’s only CIF-SS baseball champion last season was Capistrano Valley, a 2-1 winner over Foothill in the Division 1 championship game. Beckman lost to Yucaipa in last year’s Division 2 final.
