Anaheim softball celebrates first league title after defeating Katella

ANAHEIM – The party started moments after Anaheim’s Miranda Ramirez lined a single over the shortstop to drive in two runs and invoke the mercy-rule with no outs in the sixth inning.

“Ball game,” the umpire said.

Anaheim’s dugout erupted in celebration and its players soon bounced for joy near third base.

A few moments later, they floated into left field chanting and clapping.

“Ain’t no party like a A-Town party because an A-Town party don’t stop,” they roared.

The Colonists had plenty of reasons to scream and shout because they were finally champions.

Anaheim captured the first league title in school history Wednesday by defeating visiting Katella 11-1 to take the Orange League with a 9-1 record.

“We knew what we wanted and we had to get it done,” Anaheim leadoff batter Jayleena Perez said. “We were really tired of Savanna winning. … When we found out that Savanna beat Katella, we knew it was ours.”

Savanna won the past 15 league titles, compiling a 147-3 record in league along the way. But Anaheim and first-year coach Alyssa Gutierrez stormed to the title by blending several returning starters with key freshmen.

Freshman pitcher Andrea Rodarte fired a complete game for Anaheim against Katella (8-2 in league) while Ramirez, Perez and Melanie Cervantes helped lead the offense.

Perez went 3 for 4, including a two-run, slap-double to right that made the score 5-1 in the fourth. Ramirez also went 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Cervantes made 2 for 3 with with two RBIs and consecutive slick plays at third base.
