SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Orange Lutheran couldn’t muster much offense in a 2-1 loss to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the first round of the Boras Classic on Tuesday night at JSerra High.

The Lancers, who are ranked No. 2 in Orange County, had just five hits and only once did they have multiple baserunners in an inning.

A major factor in Orange Lutheran’s offensive struggles was Notre Dame pitcher Lucas Gordon. The lefty USC commit allowed just one run through six innings and struck out three.

“He is one of the best left-handers in the state, if not the country,” Orange Lutheran coach Eric Borba said of Gordon. “We did a good job getting his pitch count up early, but later in the game we didn’t have good at-bats. We allowed him to stay in the game longer than we hoped.”

Notre Dame (14-3) struck first in the first inning. Daylen Reyes led off the inning with a single and Gordon hit a double to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Reyes scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Orange Lutheran (10-3) used its speed to even the score in its half of the first inning. USC commit Jasiah Dixon singled and advanced to third on two ground balls. With two outs, Dixon stole home and did a shifty maneuver to avoid the catcher’s tag and score the lone run of the game for the Lancers.

The Lancers made their only serious threat to score in the second inning. Elijah Buries was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Justin DeCriscio and Caden Conner each singled to load the bases. Dixon hit into a fielder’s choice and Buries was thrown out at the plate. WIth two outs and the bases loaded, Gordon got Chad Born to fly out to end the threat.

“We had them on the ropes a bit and we let them off the hook,” Borba said. “We took some selfish swings. We have to have better team at-bats when you’re facing a guy like that.”

Notre Dame scored the game-winning run in the third inning. Devan Ornelas and Reyes hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After a fly out, Ben Griffin hit a run-scoring single to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.

Christian Rodriguez was solid on the mound for the Lancers. The 6-foot-6 junior pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowed just one earned run and struck out three.

“He didn’t have his best stuff, but he was very competitive for us and gave us a chance to win,” Borba said of Rodriguez. “Any time you can give up two runs you have a good chance to win a baseball game.”

The Lancers will play Maranatha of Pasadena in the consolation bracket of the Boras Classic at noon Wednesday at JSerra. Notre Dame will play Rancho Bernardo on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at JSerra.

Also in the Boras Classic:

JSerra 7, Etiwanda 5: The Lions used late-game heroics to beat Etiwanda in a first-round game at JSerra.

After Etiwanda scored five consecutive runs to tie the score 5-5, Blake Klassen hit a run-scoring single to score Colby Canales in the sixth inning to give the Lions the lead for good.

UCLA commit Michael Curialle had his first three-hit game of the season for the Lions, which included a double and two runs batted in.

Jared Glenn got the win on the mound for the Lions. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and did not allow a hit.

JSerra will play Ayala of Chino Hills in the second round of the tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m. at JSerra.
