SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – It will be a rematch in the Boras Classic’s South Tournament championship game.

JSerra’s 5-2 victory Thursday over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks at JSerra High in the semifinals puts the Lions (12-8) into the championship game Friday at 6 p.m. against La Mirada (15-3) at JSerra.

La Mirada beat Yucaipa 2-0 in Thursday’s other semifinal.

JSerra defeated La Mirada in last year’s Boras Classic South Tournament final. In this week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 1 rankings La Mirada is No. 5 and JSerra is No. 10.

With no CIF State championships in baseball the Boras Classic is the next-best thing. The tournament has a Southern California component that has been played this week at host schools JSerra and Mater Dei. The Northern California component starts April 15.

The north and south winners meet in the Boras Classic championship game April 27 at the University of San Diego.

With Friday being the fourth day of the four-day tournament, pitching has been stretched. JSerra will start sophomore Gage Jump against La Mirada.

Lions coach Brett Kay anticipates using other pitchers in the game, possibly including freshman Mason McGwire, son of former MLB slugger Mark McGwire.

JSerra had a slugger of its own Thursday: first baseman Blake Klassen, who slammed a two-run home run to right field, a rare destination for a homer at JSerra’s breezy and evening-chilly field.

It was JSerra sophomore right fielder Gabe D’Arcy, though, who came through with the biggest plays of the game.

Notre Dame had tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning. The Knights (15-4) had the bases loaded with two outs when Lucas Gordon sent a fly ball to semi-shallow right field. D’Arcy made the catch and Notre Dame’s Tommy Beres at third base tagged up. D’Arcy threw a one-hopper to Lions sophomore catcher Paul Roche who squared up to take the throw and apply the tag on Beres to complete the inning- and threat-ending double play.

D’Arcy led off the JSerra sixth inning with a two-strike single and advanced to third base on Chase Katafias’ sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Colby Canales laid down a bunt inside the third-base line, Notre Dame pitcher Connor Skertich scooped up the ball with his glove and in the same motion attempted to tag D’Arcy who while starting his slide dodged the tag and then dragged his left hand across the plate to put the Lions on top 3-2.

Canales’ bunt was a safety squeeze on which D’Arcy had to make the correct read of the situation.

“He took a gamble,” Kay said. “He told me after, ‘I know you’re going to yell at me. But coach, I got it.’ Sometimes, you’ve got to let players play.”

JSerra scored twice more in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk by Cody Schrier and an RBI single by Michael Curialle for a 5-2 lead.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Tristan LaMaison went the first 3 1/3 innings for the Lions and junior righty Cameron Cooke got the win in relief.

Kay liked the way LaMaison and Cooke competed with guile and poise Thursday.

“They wanted the ball,” Kay said, “and we need players who want the ball and want to be out there.”
