BASEBALL
Wednesday’s baseball scoreboard
Anaheim Lions Tournament
Connor Wilford and Cole Douglas combined to throw a no-hitter for No. 19 San Clemente in a 0-0 tie against Tustin in the Anaheim Lions Tournament. Wilford pitched seven innings for the Tritons and Douglas pitched one. Both teams had ties in their games on Tuesday as well. Brent Riddle had two hits for the Tritons, who could only muster five hits. San Clemente will resume Sea View League play Monday against No. 4 Aliso Niguel.
No. 15 Foothill extended its winning streak to six with an 11-7 win over El Rancho. Ketch Gannon went 3-3 at the plate with a triple, a home run and six runs batted in. Padayao drove in three runs and Alex Sardina drove in two runs on two hits. Foothill will look to extend its winning streak when it plays No. 25 Esperanza in a Century Conference crossover game on April 3.
Brock Razook and the rest of the Canyon pitching staff held Don Lugo to just three hits in a 6-0 win. Razook allowed two hits and struck out one over four innings in a winning effort. William St. Marseille struck out three over two innings of work for the Comanches in the win. Connor Clift hit a triple and drove in three runs on the offensive end for Canyon and Andrew Gaspar had two hits with a triple. Canyon will play Woodbridge Saturday in the Ryan Lemmon Invitational.
No. 25 Esperanza added to its six-game winning streak with a 2-1 win over West Linn of Oregon. Gavin Lizik was excellent on the mound for the Aztecs allowing just one hit over five innings and striking out six. Jason McDonnell and Kyle Kirk each had two hits for Esperanza and Jackson Van Ness got a walk-off hit to give the Aztecs the win.
The bats stayed hot for No. 7 Mission Viejo in a 9-3 win against Katella. The Diablos scored 14 runs Tuesday against Chino Hills and had 12 hits today against the Knights. James McDonald had two hits with a triple, a stolen base and two RBIs. Nick Dietsch and Nolan Cusey also drove in two runs for the Diablos. Hayden Cody earned the win for Mission Viejo with four innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit and struck out two. Mission Viejo is currently in first place in the South Coast League and will resume league play against No. 12 El Toro Tuesday.
USC commit Ethan Hoopingarner was effective on the mound and at the plate for No. 4 Aliso Niguel in a 10-0 win over McQueen of Nevada. Hoopingarner pitched three shutout innings, allowed just two hits and struck out five. The senior went 3-3 at the plate with three doubles and drove in three runs. Nick Hanson drove in two runs on two hits and Kevin Fitzer drove in a run on three hits for the Wolverines. Aliso Niguel will play No. 6 Servite Friday in the El Dorado Steakhouse Tournament before resuming Sea View League play against San Clemente next week.
Other games
It took 9 innings for the Servite bats to wake up in a 2-0 win over No. 11 Dana Hills. Servite, who is ranked No. 6 in the county, got seven shutout innings from Purdue commit Knolton Clark. Sophomore Tim Davidson earned the win pitching out of the bullpen for the Friars. Jake Lappin drove in the two game-winning runs for the Friars in the ninth. The Friars host White Mountain of Arkansas Thursday before playing Aliso Niguel in the El Dorado Steakhouse Tournament Friday.
No. 23 Corona del Mar won in walk-off fashion against No. 20 Marina in a Wave League game at Corona del Mar High. With the game tied at zero in the seventh inning, Nico Diferdinando lead off the inning with a double. Later in the inning, Blake Butcher hit a run-scoring single to give the Sea Kings a 1-0 win. Jarrett Thompson pitched five scoreless innings for Corona del Mar and Ryan Borquez earned the win out of the bullpen. Corona del Mar is on a four-game winning streak and will play the Vikings again Friday.
Jeremy Hayes hit a grand slam for Laguna Beach in a 9-6 win over No. 14 Newport Harbor in a Wave League game at Newport Harbor High. Hayes had hits in all three at bats for the Breakers. UCLA commit Eric Silva struck out eight over 5.2 innings of work for Laguna Beach in the win. John Olmstead hit a two-run home run for Newport Harbor in the loss and Clay Liolios drove in a run.
SOFTBALL
Wednesday’s softball scoreboard
Sarah Ladd’s dominant pitching performance propelled No. 4 Los Alamitos to a 4-1 win over No. 2 Marina in a Surf League game. The lefty pitched a complete game, allowed one run on two hits and struck out five. Ali Belarde went 3-4 at the plate with a double, a stolen base and a RBI. Emma Sellers had two hits, stole a base and drove in a run for the Griffins, who are now 2-1 in league play. Los Alamitos plays No. 3 Huntington Beach Friday.
Newport Harbor won a 16-14 shootout against Fountain Valley in a Wave League game at Fountain Valley High. Eliana Gottlieb drove in five runs for the Sailors on four hits and scored two runs. Sophomore Lindsey Blanchfield went 4-4 at the plate, scored five runs and drove in two in the win. Newport Harbor is undefeated in Wave League play and will play a doubleheader against Trabuco Hills Saturday.
No. 5 Santa Margarita won two games in the Savanna Showcase Wednesday. The Eagles beat Canby of Oregon 11-1 in a game in which Isabella Fiorentino hit a home run and drove in two runs. Santa Margarita narrowly edged Hood River Valley of Oregon 3-2. Fiorentino pitched seven innings, allowed two unearned runs and struck out six. Cadie Williams hit a triple and drove in two runs in the win for the Eagles, who are now 18-1 overall.
Costa Mesa had a 10-run first inning in a 17-1 rout of Orange in a Golden West League game. Katie Belmontes went 2-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Vanessa Rodriguez drove in a game-high four runs for the Mustangs and Natalie Torres drove in two runs and hit a double. Alexis Litvak earned the win on the circle for Costa Mesa, pitching three innings in a shortened game. Costa Mesa is 2-0 in league play and will play Calvary Chapel Friday.
No. 8 Edison beat No. 3 Huntington Beach in a Surf League game at Huntington Beach High. Hailie Benko went 1-2 with a double and two RBIs for the Chargers. Jaelyn Operana had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Talie Hannappel scattered eight hits over five innings for Edison and struck out six. Edison will play Marina Friday.
University routed Portola 11-1 in a Pacific Coast League game at Portola High. Jackie Diaz was excellent on the circle and at the plate for the Trojans, throwing five innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out six. At the plate, Diaz drove in three runs on three hits with a triple. Natalie Zane hit a home run for University, who got its first league win. The Trojans will play Woodbridge Thursday and Portola will play Irvine.
