ORANGE – Two of Orange County’s top baseball programs met Friday night at Hart Park with hopes of maintaining their early season form.

No. 3 Cypress defeated No. 1 Orange Lutheran 2-1 behind a two-run fifth inning and a solid outing from Nebraska-commit Brett Wozniak.

“They’re everything that they’re touted to be and one of the best programs in the country and we think that we are too.” Centurions coach John Weber said.

On the mound, Wozniak outlasted his counterpart Christian Rodriguez by limiting the Lancers to six hits over six innings.

Weber had nothing but good things to say about Wozniak after his performance against the Lancers (4-2).

“He epitomizes what I want my program to be. He is a bulldog,” Weber said. “He doesn’t have to have the best stuff, but he’ll fight you tooth and nail. He’s going to grind at you and he’s never going to give in to you.”

Rodriguez was perfect through four innings but the Centurions (7-1) were able to chase him from the game in the fifth.

“He fell behind to (Tyler) Chaffee 2-0 and then Chaffee gets the hit,” Weber said. “Then he (Rodriguez) jumped ahead 0-2, then we got lucky and got another hit.”

The second hit, supplied by Luke Davis, knocked Rodriguez out of the game as Orange Lutheran coach Eric Borba decided to send Max Rajcic to the mound in relief.

However, Rajcic was unable to stop the Centurions from getting on the scoreboard.

Garett Crenshaw moved the runners to second and third base before Elias Rios stepped to the plate. Rios got enough on the ball to bring Chaffee home for the first run of the game while Davis advanced to third.

Davis would score during Noah Carter’s at-bat as Rajcic’s pitch got behind catcher Brandon Heidal and Davis beat the tag at the plate for a 2-0 lead.

The Lancers responded in the bottom of the fifth by cutting the Cypress lead in half, 2-1. Carl Lawson’s one-out double was part of a three-hit inning that saw Caden Connor drive in pinch-runner Nathan Blocher.

Orange Lutheran was unable to score any more runs despite loading the bases.

“We had some opportunities, some runners in scoring position, but we weren’t able to execute the little things and it cost us,” Borba said. “Christian gave us a tremendous start, but the bottom line is we couldn’t score runs. When you give up two runs you’re supposed to win a baseball game.”
