A logjam atop one of the toughest leagues in Orange County didn’t alter the anticipated selections Saturday for the CIF-SS Division 1 girls water polo playoffs. The eye-popping excitement from the release of the postseason pairings instead came from three fresh-faced contenders in other divisions.
San Juan Hills in Division 5, Buena Park in Division 6 and Katella in Division 7 earned their highest seedings in school history, combining for two No. 1s and a No. 2 for three different leagues and a trio of school districts.
Sea View League champion San Juan Hills claimed the No. 2 seed behind Valley View of Moreno Valley while the Freeway League’s Buena Park and the Orange League’s Katella took No. 1 seeds.
“We couldn’t remember any team from Buena Park that has been ranked No. 1 in CIF,” said Ted Clark, Buena Park’s veteran coach who assisting coach Shane LaFortune.
San Juan Hills (20-4) missed being playoff eligible last season by one victory but stormed to its first league crown under fourth-year coach Ivan Buich.
“Lots of hard work,” said Buich, who guided the San Juan Hills boys to a CIF-SS Division 5 runner-up finish in 2016.
Buich has molded a team led by seniors Lacey Hall and Caroline McClaskey and junior Kimora Farry with some impact freshmen, including goalie Sarah McClaskey, Ruby Hodge and Bailey VanBlarcom.
Katella (19-7) engineered its a turnaround under second-year coach OJ Vazquez. The Knights finished 3-15 in 2017 but edged Santa Ana Valley this winter for the Orange League title. Katella returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
“It’s been really exciting to see these girls grow and excel,” said Vazquez, a former assistant at Mater Dei and Katella product.
Katella has leaned on seniors Raquel Enriquez (goalie), center Chantal Diaz, defender Rosa Zamora and attacker Berenice Rumbo.
Buena Park features eight seniors and plenty of experience in tough games. The Coyotes lost to La Habra in the third-place game in the Freeway League tournament but beat the Highlanders earlier in league and played powers Sunny Hills and Troy close.
The team is led by goalie Vanesa Navarrete and center Rawzan Castellon, both seniors.
“(LaFortune) has done a great job,” said Clark, whose school will be building a new 45-meter pool.
The eight selections for Division 1 were, in order: top-ranked Laguna Beach (26-1), Orange Lutheran, Dos Pueblos, Foothill, San Marcos, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Mater Dei. The group’s order matched the rankings entering the week and not the three-way tie atop the Trinity League.
Santa Margarita finished tied for first with Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei and won a card draw for the league’s top seed but wasn’t selected for Division 1. The Eagles claimed the No. 1 seed in Division 2, one spot ahead of South Coast League champion San Clemente.
