Steve Fryer makes five early predictions for the the CIF Southern Section boys basketball playoffs.

FIVE PREDICTIONS

1. Mater Dei gets to the semifinals in the Open Divison. The Monarchs play the game the right way – they share the ball, they play terrific defense and they don’t mope at the officials or each other when things go badly. But they are awfully young, probably too young, to win a second straight championship in this daunting division.

2. Fairmont Prep wins the Division 4AA championship. The Huskies are too big and fast for the other teams in the division. They do have a tendency to play a little out of control. That can be fixed with a few well-timed timeouts.

3. Two Orange County teams reach the Division 2AA semifinals. The county has a good mix of teams in this rugged division, including Orange Lutheran, Cypress and Villa Park. For Orange Lutheran, it’s about shot selection; for Cypress, it’s about getting enough points to outscore the high-octane opponents it will face; for Villa Park, it’s about making sure Julien Franklin is not the only go-to scorer in crunch time.

4. La Habra gets to the Division 3AA semifinals. It’s uncertain if the Highlanders can beat the athletically-superior Rolling Hills Prep or San Gabriel Academy in the semifinals or even the finals. But no team is going to out-effort La Habra in this division.

5. A JSerra-Santa Margarita rematch in the Division 1 playoffs. It’s difficult to be sure how that division will be seeded. But maybe it’s JSerra vs. Santa Margarita in the semifinals … or even in the championship game. A darkhorse to watch for in this division is Canyon, which relishes the “nobody believes in us but us” role.
