Saturday’s baseball scoreboard

While most of Southern California baseball was rained out Saturday, JSerra got in another doubleheader in Alabama. The Lions dropped both games to Vestavia Hills, 5-4 in eight innings and 3-1, closing out their four-day trip to the Heart of Dixie with a 0-5 record.

The highlight of the trip came in Saturday’s first game, when Cody Schrier cracked a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to tie it 4-4 and force extra innings. Vestavia Hills won it on a two-out, walk-off hit in the bottom of the eighth. Schrier finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for the game. Nino Vultaggio was 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored as the Lions managed just six hits. Sophomore right-hander Luke Jewett pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned) and four walks while striking out three. Andrew Miller got two outs in the eighth, striking out one, but was touched for a hit, a walk and an unearned run.

All the scoring in the second game was done in the first three innings. Vestavia Hills (6-1) led 3-0 after two and JSerra scored in the top of the third. The Lions got a hit in the top of the seventh but couldn’t score.

JSerra (4-6), the No. 5 team in Orange County, will visit No. 2 Huntington Beach on Tuesday.
