ANAHEIM – Before the game, Fairmont Prep coach Joedy Gardner said Ryan Langborg is the best player his team would face this season.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, he was right.
Langborg hit six 3-pointers to lead La Jolla Country Day to a 73-62 victory over the Huskies in the semifinals of the CIF Southern California Division III Regionals on Saturday evening at Fairmont Prep.
The Torreys (21-13) will take on Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta in the regional final on Tuesday.
Langborg led all scorers with 28 points to go with his seven rebounds while Jayson Taylor added 12 points and eight blocks.
“We knew if we got stops defensively, that offensively we knew we would be able to take care of business,” Langborg said. “We know we shoot it well from the outside, and that is something we used to create space by penetrating and kicking. We aren’t as big as them, so we knew we had to try to outphysical their bigs inside and make them beat us on the outside.”
Kofi Aboagye led Fairmont Prep (27-8) with 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Atin Wright added 19 points.
The Huskies, who trailed 40-31 at halftime, cut their deficit to two points, but that was as close they got.
“We got it to two and that was big,” Gardner said. “Then, we are down four and we had Atin (Wright) at the line, and he’s an 85 percent free throw shooter, and he misses both. They hit two more and we had to start gambling.
“We felt really good at that position with Atin at the free throw line and hopefully getting a stop on the other end. It just didn’t happen tonight.”
Freshman James Hapgood scored 14 points while his older brother, John Hapgood, added 11 points and six rebounds for the Torreys while Raymond Lu had 12 assists to go with his six points.
Pape Cisse scored 15 points and Lamine Niang grabbed 13 rebounds for the Huskies, which took the CIF-SS 4AA Division title last week.
“I told them how proud I am of them,” Gardner said. “I told them it was a pleasure coaching them and our staff was honored to coach them. They were like brothers to us. I told them to keep their heads up because they’re champions, no matter what, and this is something that will stick with them forever.”
