USC athletic director Lynn Swann had several reasons to part ways from USC football coach Clay Helton but released a statement Sunday that announced the return of the Helton for 2019.
Despite losing back-to-back games against rival UCLA and Notre Dame and the lack of support from former players and fans, it was not enough to relieve Helton of his coaching duties.
“Clay Helton is our head coach and he will continue to be our head coach.”

With no changes made at the top, Swann and Helton’s comments Sunday made it clear that neither side was happy about the “disappointing” 5-7 season.
Here are the rumblings regarding USC:
If Clay Helton’s buyout is around $15 million, which I’ve heard from multiple people, there’s a bigger problem with the USC athletic department than a bad football coach. We’re talking about an interim coach who had never been a head coach before and was in Memphis for a decade.
