DJ Rodman has been a varsity starter since his freshman year at Corona del Mar.

He has improved every season, adding different skills to his game.

On Tuesday, Rodman, now at JSerra, showed how much time he has spent working on his outside shooting. He made four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 23 points as the Lions beat Fairmont Prep 67-52 in a pool-play game on the second day of the Diablo Inferno tournament at Mission Viejo High.

Rodman, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, said developing a quicker, cleaner release on his outside shot was something he emphasized.

“Making it tighter, making it more consistent,” said Rodman of his outside shooting work. “I’m trying to create my own shots. Just making the ball go in more.”

The ball went in frequently for JSerra. The Lions (2-0) scored 31 points in the first quarter to take command of the game and carry a 31-11 lead into the second quarter. The 15-point final margin was the closest Fairmont Prep (1-1) would get after the opening period.

Ian Martinez, a 6-3 junior guard, scored 20 points for JSerra which is ranked No. 5 in Orange County and No. 14 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1.

Fairmont Prep was led by Atin Wright’s 29 points. Wright, a 6-foot junior guard, scored 18 in the fourth quarter.

JSerra first-year coach Keith Wilkinson was pleased with the results.

“We shared the ball well,” said Wilkinson, who was an assistant coach at UTEP and most recently at UC Riverside. “I thought we defended well in the first half, really well, and limited (Fairmont Prep) in transition buckets.”

Wilkinson said he challenged Rodman to be a leading force for the Lions and Rodman has responded.

“Since about the end of summer DJ has been on an absolute tear,” said Wilkinson who played at Capistrano Valley and USC. “He’s working his tail off and he’s trying to be a great player.”

Rodman showed Tuesday that he is progressing toward that.
