Highlights and top scorers from the Orange County basketball games on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mission Viejo scored an international victory Tuesday night, beating Box Hill, Australia, 65-53 in the Diablo Inferno.
Griff Higgins scored 18 points on four 3-pointers, while Presley Eldridge and Nate Hewitt had nine points each as the Diablos improved to 2-0 in their own tournament.
Box Hill, a sports academy in suburban Melbourne that tours the U.S. every other year, had beaten Laguna Hills 96-36 in Monday’s first round.
“I was told tonight that this was their first loss in two years,” said Mission Viejo coach Troy Roelen. “They’re very good.”
Box Hill also has its JV team playing in an Orange County tourney, and its girls varsity and JV teams are playing here this week as well.
Zack Porter had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead Orange past Baldwin Park 55-32 in the Coyote Classic at Buena Park.
Sophomore twin towers Gavin and Aidan O’Neill (both 6-foot-3) had 21 and 20 points, respectively, as Saddleback Valley Christian beat host Buena Park 73-46 in the Coyote Classic.
Costa Mesa opened its season with a hot hand and outscored Huntington Beach 81-73 in the Grizzly Invitational at Godinez. Osman Hefner and Nico Dasca, a pair of 5-foot-10 guards, scored 27 and 26 points respectively for the Mustangs.
Maker Makur scored 24 points as Orange Lutheran topped Los Altos 78-63 in the Battle Zone at Corona Centennial. The Lancers finished strong with a 31-23 fourth quarter.
Houston Mallette’s 20 points led five players in double figures as Pacifica Christian crushed Calvary Chapel/Downey 99-28. Brown added 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Julien Franklin had 38 points and seven rebounds to lead Villa Park (6-0) to an 88-59 win over Irvine in the Grizzly Invitational.
The Coyote Classic at Buena Park might have the Blowout of the Year so far this season, with Crenshaw defeating Carnegie-Riverside 117-6 Tuesday night. That tops the 117-12 loss Carnegie suffered against JW North of Riverside last Wednesday. Crenshaw (3-0) had beaten Valencia 77-50 in the first round Monday.
GIRLS
Malia Goldsmith poured in 34 points, but University lost 67-63 in overtime to Box Hill, Australia, in the South Coast Classic. University led by three points with 20 seconds left in regulation, but Box Hill got an offensive rebound and drained a 3-pointer to tie it. Claire Kawata added 14 points for the Trojans.
Tati Bruening had 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks as Corona del Mar beat Mission Viejo 60-22 in the Corona del Mar Tipoff Classic.
