Mater Dei was selected Sunday to play in the CIF State Open Division championship game on Dec. 8 at Cerritos College, as expected, and Western will play at San Gorgonio on Friday, Nov. 30 in the CIF Southern California Regional bowl championships.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. for the Division 5AA game between Western and San Gorgonio.
Winners of the Southern California Regional bowl games play the winners of the Northern California Regional bowl games in the CIF State championship games. Teams chosen for the CIF State Open Division championship game do not have to play in the regionals round.
The opponent for Mater Dei, which defeated St. John Bosco in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game Friday, will be announced Dec. 2. If De La Salle of Concord defeats Liberty of Brentwood on Saturday, Dec. 1 in the CIF North Coast Section Open Division final it is expected that De La Salle would be Mater Dei’s opponent.
Mater Dei (12-2) defeated De La Salle 52-21 in last season’s CIF State Open Division title game.
Western (12-2) won its first CIF-SS football championship Friday with a 49-21 victory over Peninsula in the Division 11 final.
San Gorgonio (11-3) beat Brea Olinda 21-17 in the Division 9 championship game Friday. San Gorgonio defeated Garden Grove 40-27 in the semifinals.
Admission to CIF SoCal Regionals games is $12 for adults and $8 for children 13 and younger, for senior citizens (65 and older) and for students with valid student identification.
Only CIF section champions are eligible for regional bowl games.
The Open Division state championship game will be played Dec. 8, and the state finals for all of the other divisions will be played Dec. 14-15.
