Game of the Week: Edison and San Juan Hills focused on Friday’s playoff game, not past result

Sometimes it’s a good idea for football teams to suppress a detail or two for the sake of focus.

That’s the approach No. 1 4 Edison and No. 15 San Juan Hills took in preparing for their clash Friday night in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

For different reasons, neither side really wants to remember the results of their game on Sept. 9. Edison won 33-14 at San Juan Hills, also the site for Friday’s 7 p.m. kickoff.

“It means nothing,” Edison second-year coach Jeff Grady told his players this week. “Don’t be comfortable just because we were fortunate to win.”

The Chargers (5-5), Grady explained, are guarding against over-confidence and striving for improvement in their second consecutive Division 2 playoff appearance.

San Juan Hills coach Rob Frith acknowledged some excitement in facing a team that earlier beat the Stallions (7-3) but said revenge isn’t the overwhelming motivation.

“They’re just another opponent,” the first-year coach said of Edison, which trailed 7-0 at halftime of the Sept. 9 game. “We’ve traded paint with them already once … Our focus is on ourselves.”

That intense focus could help the Stallions execute their game play.

San Juan Hills discovered a solid ground attack since the teams’ Sept. 9 meeting. During a six-game streak since the loss, running backs Chase Monarch, Austin Hogan and Stephen Margaretis have emerged as a productive trio.

All three shared the spotlight as the Stallions captured the Sea View League title and supported sophomore quarterback Hudson Jones..

“We’re a different team (since losing to Edison),” said Frith, who was known for his record-setting passing attack while at El Toro.

The Stallions rely on an offensive line anchored by touted left tackle Sean Rhyan. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound senior has been offered by Alabama, Notre Dame and the entire Pac 12 Conference among others.

“He’s having an outstanding year,” Frith said of Rhyan, who has been selected to the All-American Bowl on Jan. 5 in San Antonio, Texas.

Rhyan joins forces on the offensive line with guards Parker Whitham and Kaden Cordero, center Omar Al-ali and right tackle Nathan Newkirk.

Edison also has established its ground attack in recent weeks after losing senior quarterback Patrick Angelovic to a collar bone injury against San Juan Hills.

Running back Kobe Lopez rushed for 88 yards on 19 carries on Sept. 9. But in the Sunset League, the senior produced consecutive games of 164, 169 and 212 yards against Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor and Fountain Valley.

Junior Mike Walters also has emerged as physical runner.

Grady his team has embraced the style, a departure from the Chargers’ signature passing attack. Grady especially credits linemen Grant Conaway, Jacob Parsons, Ryan Easterday, Cade Jones and Trent Jordahl.

“Our kids really bought into it,” Grady said of the running game.

Edison turned to sophomore Braeden Boyles in the absence of Angelovic. The 5-foot-8 Boyles made his first start against San Clemente and has flashed a strong arm and slick abilities as a runner.

“He’s done a good job,” Grady said. “He’s played some really good competition.”

Boyles will certainly keep an eye out for San Juan Hills defensive end Cade Albright, who recently was offered by Utah State. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior has 12.5 sacks but didn’t play Sept. 9 because of injury.

Yes, that’s one detail Edison will remember.
