Is it better to be a pilot or a gunner on the Millennium Falcon?
A pilot, said Lydia Dupont of Huntington Beach, who got to be both in Smugglers Run, the simulator ride inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
The ride seats six people at a time, and each plays a role in the flight that contributes to the success or failure of the mission.
“Being a pilot is more fun because you’re right in the front,” she said in a phone interview Saturday.
Dupont was one of the first to experience Disneyland’s new attraction when it opened to the public on Friday, and had a reservation for Saturday as well.
Only park guests with reservations are being let in Galaxy’s Edge for four-hour time blocks. The reservation system will continue through June 23.
Dupont’s reservations were for 2-6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. She rode the Falcon a total of three times, and was in the pilot seat the first and third times.
Experience paid off, because she said at first, “it’s difficult to know how much you’re influencing it.”
Friday’s trip made it easier to relax and take in Galaxy’s Edge on Saturday, she said.
On Saturday, she and her husband went to Oga’s Cantina first. The bar, which serves alcoholic drinks and provides animatronic entertainment for patrons, has been one of the pressure points for crowds, and Dupont said people only get to stay inside for 45 minutes.
“It’s definitely popular. They were limiting the line and people were milling around waiting for it to open.”
Dupont enjoyed the cantina but said it would be a better experienced if it was larger or had a second room.
The buzz around Galaxy’s Edge has kept crowds down at the rest of the Disneyland Resort, she said.
“If you’re not going to Galaxy’s Edge, it’s a great time to get into the park.”
