Santa Margarita’s boys athletics program won the CIF-Southern Section Commissioner’s Cup that is awarded annually to the top overall sports programs in the section.
It is the fourth time the Eagles boys athletics program has won the Commissioner’s Cup since the Cup was first awarded at the end of the 1991-92 school year.
Commissioner’s Cup winners are selected via a points system that awards five points for a divisional championship, three points for a runnerup finish, two points for advancing to the semifinals or third-place finish in a team-place sport (cross country, golf, swimming and diving and track and field) and one point for a fourth-place finish in a team-place sport. Tiebreaker criteria are in place.
Santa Margarita’s boys program had 18 points to edge Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (18). Servite was third at 15 points. Other Orange County boys programs that finished in the top 10 are Mater Dei (No. 4); Newport Harbor (No. 7); and University (No. 9).
Santa Margarita’s girls program was second to Roosevelt of Eastvale. Both had 14 points but Roosevelt won via tiebreaker.
Laguna Beach finished at No. 4.
Santa Margarita has the most Commissioner’s Cups in Orange County, with seven on the girls side and four on the boys side.
