BUENA PARK – Tesoro boys basketball coach Steve Garrett knew that his players would need to knock down their open looks against Inglewood if they wanted to reach the final of the Coyote Classic at Buena Park High.
The Titans, ranked No. 6 in the county, turned a tied game in the fourth quarter into a comfortable 58-45 win over Inglewood Friday night thanks a 14-0 run late in the game.
Triston Broughton led Tesoro (4-0) with 21 points and Noah Honetschlager had 16 points and 15 rebounds and key reserve Matt DeAngelo chipped in with 12 points.
“It was good to see the 3-ball start to fall,” Garrett said. “We started off poorly with our shots, but they were there so that was great, and I thought our guys really clamped down defensively.”
The contest was tied at halftime 29-29 and stayed close entering the fourth quarter.
The Sentinels (3-3) tied the score at 41-41 on a jumper by Montana Craig (21 points), and then DeAngelo drilled two 3-pointers during the decisive scoring barrage that sealed the outcome for Tesoro.
The Titans will face Cypress in the final Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Cypress defeated Crenshaw 89-65.
Broughton did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 13 of his team-high 21 in the final two quarters.
“I thought our seniors did a great job,” Garrett said. “Triston (Broughton) just racking it to the rim and playing tough, and our big guy (Honetschlager) had great composure the whole night on both ends of the court.”
Honetschlager won the battle of the big men, outdueling Inglewood’s 6-foot-9 center Dallas James.
James (four fouls) was in constant foul trouble as he went toe-to-toe with Tesoro’s 6-8 senior.
In contrast Honetschlager played all 32 minutes.
“He’s super-crafty and was really mature tonight on both ends,” Garrett said of Honetschlager. “It was great not having to take him out of the game, so it’s a testament to his conditioning too.”
Craig was the early catalyst for Inglewood as he scored 17 points in the first half with 11 of those coming in the opening quarter.
The Titans were able to limit Craig to just four points in the second half and point guard Kendall Collins managed to score nine points for the Sentinels.
Garrett credited his team’s collective effort in slowing down Inglewood’s two best players.
“We had to try and use two or three guys to guard him (Craig) because he’s a guy you can’t guard one-on-one, and we kept the ball out of 0’s (Collins) hands.” Garrett said.
