SANTA ANA – Dayne Chalmers’ main sport is volleyball.
Chalmers, a senior at Newport Harbor, is going to UC Santa Barbara on a volleyball scholarship. He is playing on Newport Harbor’s basketball team for fun.
El Toro probably wishes Chalmers would only play volleyball.
Chalmers scored 22 points Friday to lead the Sailors to a 61-58 win over El Toro in a Century Elks Classic boys basketball tournament semifinal at Century High
Newport Harbor will play Sunny Hills in the tournament championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Century.
The Sailors are 17-1 and have won 13 in a row. Their only loss was to Villa Park.
Newport Harbor, which won the championship of the St. Margaret’s Tartan Classic earlier this month and is No. 12 in the OC Varsity Orange County top 25, is approaching the school single-season record for wins, which is 24.
Basketball is pretty much a side hobby for Chalmers, a 6-foot-4 senior forward. It’s an enjoyable one that he never considered abandoning to focus on volleyball. He is playing on a team of friends.
“I love basketball,” said Chalmers, whose father Evan Chalmers is Newport Harbor’s baseball coach. “I knew from the start I was going to keep playing, especially with this group. I’m not looking to play college hoops so I’m just trying to enjoy this while it lasts.”
Chalmers made 11 of 15 shots, most of them within 6 feet of the basket, Friday. He scored 10 points in the second quarter and eight in the fourth. The Sailors shot 24 for 43 from the floor for 56 percent.
El Toro (8-9) will play Beckman in the third-place game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Century.
Newport Harbor appeared to be in for a blowout win over El Toro when the Sailors had a 15-point lead in the second quarter. The Chargers, led by quick senior point guard Nick D’Amato, rallied to cut their deficit to seven points, 33-26, going into halftime.
El Toro outscored Newport Harbor by three points in the third quarter after which the Sailors had a 44-40 lead. The Chargers continued to chisel away at Newport Harbor’s lead and took their first and only lead of the game, 58-57, on a D’Amato driving layup with 23 seconds remaining.
The Sailors’ Levi Darrow scored on a driving layup to put his team back on top 59-58. Newport’s Robbie Spooner made two free throws with three seconds left to produce the 61-58 final score.
Newport Harbor coach Bob Torribio said the loss of the big lead was not because the Sailors faltered but it was because the Chargers played well.
“They play hard and they get up in your stuff,” Torribio said. “They make shots and they’re well-coached. They’re a good team.”
Also at the Century Elks Classic:
Sunny Hills 64, No. 13 Beckman 59: Luke Hosozawa scored 32 points with 14 rebounds for the Lancers (12-7) in a semifinal. They play Newport Harbor in the tournament championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Century.
