STOCKTON — In a game that was tight throughout, foul trouble and sloppy play ultimately doomed UC Irvine on Saturday night.
Ajare Sanni scored 10 of his 23 points after regulation and Roberto Gallinat added 20 points to help Pacific beat turnover-plagued UCI 84-75 in overtime at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Sanni was 8 for 16 from the field, including 3 for 5 from 3-point range, and Gallinat was 15 for 18 from the free-throw line. Jahlil Tripp added 10 points and seven rebounds for Pacific (10-5), which has won five of its last six.
Max Hazzard made five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 28 points for UCI (11-4), which committed 19 turnovers and was whistled for 33 of the 53 fouls in the game. Pacific scored 33 points at the free-throw line, compared to 19 for UCI.
Sanni hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 10-0 run to open overtime and Kendall Small’s dunk with 1:41 left gave the Tigers a 77-66 lead. Pacific made its last five shots and the Anteaters committed turnovers on four of their first five possessions after regulation.
There were 12 ties and 15 lead changes and neither team led by more than eight points before overtime. Hazzard’s shot with .08 left in regulation was off the mark and the game headed to overtime tied at 63.
Evan Leonard added 13 points and Elston Jones had a season-high 12 rebounds for the Anteaters, who have lost two in a row.
UCI concludes the nonconference portion of its schedule on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Texas-Rio Grande Valley at the Bren Events Center.
