Roundup: No. 1 Mater Dei girls basketball beats No. 2 Rosary for tournament title

Mater Dei’s top-ranked girls basketball team rallied in the second half Saturday night to capture its first showdown with No. 2 Rosary along with a prestigious tournament title for the first time since 2008.

Cal-bound point guard Cailyn Crocker scored 22 points with eight assists and forward Brooke Demetre added 15 points and five rebounds as the Monarchs posted a 69-58 victory in the Premier Division championship of the 16th SoCal Holiday Prep Classic at Del Norte in San Diego.

Meaali’i Amosa narrowly missed a double-double for Mater Dei (18-2) with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Rosary (14-4) led 29-28 at the half and 39-36 with 4:30 left in the third quarter before Mater Dei went on a 14-0 run to lead 55-43 going into the fourth.

Speedy point guard Asia Avinger scored 14 points to lead Rosary while Kate Goostrey added nine.

The teams clash against Jan. 10 at Mater Dei in their only Trinity League game. The league is playing a single round this season.

At the Doyle/Wiley Orange County Tournament of Champions final:

Sonora 50, Lakewood 39: Calla Anderson had 23 points and 12 rebounds and played strong defense and Elizabeth Yoshitake added 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Raiders to the title at Edison.

At the Garden Grove Classic:

Bishop Montgomery 78, Huntington Beach 58: Meghan McIntyre scored 17 points and all-tournament selection Bella Serrano added 15 but the Oilers (11-5) fell in the final.

Andie Payne chipped in three blocked shots for the Oilers.

Kayla Padilla of Bishop Montgomery was selected tournament MVP.

At the Buena Park/Savanna tournament:

In the third-place game:

Santa Margarita 38, El Dorado 37: Point guard Grace Kozak scored seven of her nine points in the fourth period, including a fastbreak layup off her steal for a 38-35 lead with 1:30 left, to lift the Eagles.

El Dorado’s Kenedy Lilly (16 points) out-dueled Jocelyn Ewell (11) in a clash of standout centers.
