Sophomore guard Meghan McIntyre scored 13 points and junior guard Marisa Tanga added 11 as Huntington Beach’s girls basketball team defeated short-handed Laguna Hills 53-19 in the semifinals of the Garden Grove Classic on Friday night.
The Oilers (11-4) didn’t face Laguna Hills twins Kayla and Lina Chang — the guards were attending a funeral — but they will encounter plenty of athleticism in the final Saturday night against top-seeded Bishop Montgomery. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Garden Grove High.
“I think they’re an Open (Division) team,” Huntington Beach coach Russell McClurg said of Bishop Montgomery, which features Mater Dei transfer sophomore Khylee Pepe. “Very athletic.”
Bishop Montgomery, an Open Division team last season, advanced to the final with a 73-37 victory against Westminster.
But as daunting as Saturday’s final appears for the Oilers, the game will continue to prepare them for a Surf League showdown at Los Alamitos on Jan. 10.
“Los Alamitos is the best team in our league,” McClurg said.
Sophomore center Andie Payne helped lead the Oilers’ defense Friday with blocked four shots.
Laguna Hills plays Westminster in the third-place game Saturday at 6 p.m.
In another game Friday:
At the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic:
Rosary 81, Mission Hills 64: Asia Avinger scored 20 points, Nicole Rodriguez had 18 and junior Kate Goostrey added 16 points – including the 1,000 point of her career – as the Royals won at Del Notre in San Diego to reach Saturday night’s 5 p.m. final against Trinity League rival Mater Dei.
Mater Dei plays host to Rosary in the teams’ lone Trinity League game Jan. 10.
