VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week

Each week, publications from the The Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (including the Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) nominate Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each nominee is entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week county-wide vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think is the best athlete this week. The overall winner will be announced on Friday, Nov. 16.

Demario King, Los Alamitos: The 6-foot-3 receiver finished his high school career in style with four total touchdowns. King ran for two scores, caught a pass for a third and then returned a kickoff 98 yards for a fourth and final touchdown in a 49-32 loss to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals.

Shane Randle, Valley View: Randle scored all three of his goals in the second half, including the game-winner with 48 seconds remaining, to help the Eagles rally for a 10-9 victory over Tustin in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 championship match. Randle, a senior center, scored twice in a 58-second span of the third period to help the Eagles get within one goal. In the fourth period, he collected a rebound and sent the ball into the cage to lift Valley View to its second consecutive section title.

Joel Ayala, Eisenhower: Ayala had a huge part in leading the Eagles to a 28-0 win over Chaffey in the CIF-SS Division 10 quarterfinals. He had 13 carries for 133 yards and three touchdowns and also caught a 13-yard pass.

Liam Harrison, Foothill: The 6-foot-4 sophomore goalie made 15 saves to help the Knights defeat Mira Costa 6-4 in the CIF-SS Division 2 final. “Their goalie played great,” Mira Costa coach Jon Reichardt said. Harrison recorded 14 blocks, including one against a penalty shot in overtime, in a 12-10 victory against Corona del Mar in the semifinals. As a freshman, Harrison had 12 saves to help Foothill defeat Corona del Mar 10-7 in the finals.

Jesus Padilla, California: California’s senior utility player had the game of his life in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 boys water polo championship in Irvine, leading the Condors to their first championship in school history. Padilla scored seven goals in California’s dramatic 10-9 victory, including the game-winner with 1:29 left to seal the deal.

Garth White, Oaks Christian: With just 18 seconds remaining, Oaks Christian kicker Garth White nailed a game-winning 26-yard field goal to complete a thrilling 35-34 comeback victory over JSerra on the road. The win gave the Lions a berth to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals against St. John Bosco at home on Friday.

Stephen Bradford, North Torrance: Bradford rushed for 332 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner with seven seconds remaining, to lead the Saxons in a 33-28 CIF-Southern Section Division 9 quarterfinal win over San Marino on Friday.
