Myron Miller has resigned as head coach of Tustin High’s football team.

Miller, 75, said he that does not mean he is done coaching.

“I’m not retiring,” Miller said. “Truth is, it’s been 26 years at Tustin and now they need something different and I need something different.”

Miller coached Tustin in two stints. The first started in 1995 and ended at the conclusion of the 2012 season. This second stint covered 2016-18.

Miller also has been head coach at Ramona and at Costa Mesa.

Miller coached the Tillers to four CIF-Southern Section championship games. They won the Southwestern Division championship in 2011 when he was named Orange County Coach of the Year. Six of his Tustin players went on to play in the NFL, and many more played college football.

Tustin this season finished tied for second place in the Empire League. The Tillers qualified for the playoffs as an at-large team. They lost to top-seeded South Hills of West Covina 27-7 in the Division 6 first round to finish 4-7 overall.

“I really appreciate my 26 years at Tustin,” Miller said.

His Tustin teams were famous for their double-wing offense in which the emphasis was heavily on running the ball. Rarely would Tustin throw more than five passes in a game.

Miller was keen to incorporate more passing into the Tustin offense in recent years.

“The last few years we hardly ran the double wing,” Miller said. “We mostly ran a pro-set offense. But I still believe in the running game.”

Miller said his immediate plans are to work on his physical condition.

“When you’re a football coach,” he said, “you’re chasing kids all around and you don’t take care of yourself very well. You don’t eat well or do the fitness things you usually do.”

He is available to become a head coach at a school that would be a good fit.

“Maybe I can find a diamond-in-the-rough program that’s crazy enough to hire a 75-year-old coach,” Miller said. “I’m ready for one more challenge. I’ve still got it in me.”
