Mater Dei-Central in CIF State volleyball final Saturday

Mater Dei tries for its first CIF State girls volleyball championship Saturday when the Monarchs play Central of Fresno at Santiago Canyon College in Orange in the Open Division final.

Mater Dei-Central is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.

Mater Dei (42-2) defeated Marymount of Los Angeles in the Southern California Regionals on Tuesday 3-2. The Monarchs trailed 2-0 in that match before winning three sets in a row to advance to the state final.

Central (39-5) defeated Buchanan of Clovis 3-0 in the Northern California Regionals Open Division final Tuesday. Central had lost to Buchanan in a CIF-Central Section final last week.

Central-Mater Dei is the last of six CIF State finals played Friday and Saturday at Santiago College.

It is Mater Dei’s fourth CIF State girls volleyball finals appearance. The Monarchs are 0-3 in CIF State girls volleyball finals, including a 3-0 loss last season to Archbishop Mitty of San Jose.

Mater Dei is No. 1 in the state rankings compiled by CalHiSports.com. Central is No. 8.

Admission to the CIF State volleyball finals is $12 for adults and $8 for seniors (65 and older), children (5-13) and for students with valid student identification.

Friday

Division V: Washington Union (34-7) vs. El Camino Real (16-16), 4 p.m.

Division I: Bishop O’Dowd (34-6) vs. Temecula Valley (23-7), 6:30 p.m.

Saturday

Division IV: Hilmar (35-12) vs. San Luis Obispo (24-14), 11 a.m.

Division III: Presentation (17-18) vs. Ontario Christian (38-2), 1:30 p.m.

Division II: Los Altos (33-8) vs. Village Christian (39-9), 4 p.m.

Open Division: Central (39-5) vs. Mater Dei (42-2), 6:30 p.m.
