SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The Calabasas football team overcame tremendous adversity Saturday to beat San Juan Hills 41-20 and advance to the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

The game was supposed to be played Friday, but it was postponed a day due to many Calabasas residents being forced to evacuate their homes by the Woolsey fire.

“This game was all about Calabasas, all about the community,” Calabasas coach Chris Claiborne said. “I hope everyone understands we are playing for them. I hope they can come out next week, enjoy the game and get away from all the other stuff. This is for them.”

Calabasas (10-2) will host Upland in the semifinals next week. The Coyotes last made the semifinals in 2016 when they beat Capistrano Valley for the Division 5 championship.

The Coyotes picked apart the San Juan Hills defense with their passing game. Junior quarterback Jaden Casey completed 18 of 25 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns.

“This is his first year in our system and he is doing a great job,” Claiborne said of Casey. “It’s a lot different than what he has done in the past. He has to do a lot of reading and he’s done a great job.”

Calabasas jumped on the Stallions early. After recovering an onside kick attempt by San Juan Hills to open the game, the Coyotes engineered a 55-yard touchdown drive, capped by an 8-yard TD pass from Casey to Mycah Pittman.

San Juan Hills (8-4) fumbled a snap and Calabasas safety Jared Hopper recovered the ball and ran it 27 yards to the Stallions 18-yard line. On the next play, running back Johnny Williams ran for an 18-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

Williams was Calabasas’ leading rusher Saturday with 66 yards on nine carries and three touchdowns.

After a failed fake punt attempt by San Juan Hills, the Coyotes went up 21-0 with a scoring drive that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Williams.

“They capitalized on our mistakes,” San Juan Hills coach Rob Frith said. “Going into the game we knew that we couldn’t make mistakes and give them more opportunities. Unfortunately we did that. They are a good football team and they will take advantage of any hiccup.”

The Stallions took advantage of a rare mistake by Calabasas to get on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Defensive back Nic Mendiola picked up a Coyotes fumble and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

Calabasas began the second half with a 69-yard touchdown pass from Casey to Pittman to bring the lead back to 20 points. Pittman caught three passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns.

On the next Calabasas possession, Casey threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to 6-foot-6 receiver Johnny Wilson to make the score 34-7.

San Juan Hills scored two running touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Chase Monarch scored on a 5-yard run to cut the lead to 21 points. After Caden Vaughn returned an interception to the 1-yard line, Stallions running back Austin Hogan ran for a TD to make the score 34-20.

The Stallions had possession with four minutes left in the game, but they failed to convert a fourth down, and Williams later ran for a 10-yard touchdown to secure the victory.

San Juan Hills defensive end Cade Albright had three sacks and was in the Calabasas backfield the entire game.

“That was a good team. They never quit,” Claiborne said. “They came after us in the pass rush and we had to adjust. Our boys did a good job. They are determined to keep going.”
