Highlights and top scorers from the Orange County boys and girls basketball games on Thursday, Nov. 15:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Balanced scoring prevailed over long-range firepower Thursday as Esperanza edged University 98-92 in a Rumble for Rosecrans Avenue tournament game at Sunny Hills High.

The Aztecs put six players in double figures, led by Jason Francis with 22 points, and shot nearly 50 percent (33 of 67) to win the Silver Division shootout. Cory Johnson added 16 points, Tane Sedgewick 15, Will Steinbeck and Trevor Geiger 14 each and Isaiah Alvarez 11 for Esperanza.

University countered with sophomore Kody Uyesugi, who poured in 38 points on seven 3-pointers, and senior Andrea Roy, who scored 31 points on nine 3’s.

Esperanza led 43-33 at halftime on the strength of a 27-16 second quarter. University rallied with a 26-16 fourth quarter to send it into overtime tied at 77-77. It was 84-84 after the first OT.

Ueysugi also had 31 points on seven 3’s in University’s 90-40 rout of Glenn on Monday.

A.J. Perry  and Colby Waite combined for seven 3-pointers and 36 of Canyon’s 46 points, but the Comanches lost to Rancho Verde 61-46 in the Inland Empire Classic. Perry finished with 23 points and Waite 13.

Canyon trailed just 39-34 after three quarters, but Rancho Verde pulled away with a 22-12 fourth quarter.

GIRLS

Sophomore Angela Choi scored a career-high 23 points to lead Oxford Academy past Sunny Hills 56-26 in the Oxford Academy Tournament.

The win put the Patriots in Saturday’s championship game against Foothill. Sunny Hills will play Orange Lutheran for third place in the 16-team tournament.
