On the Market: Old-Town Charmer is a Treat Near Orange’s Historic Plaza

Treats in the Street on Oct. 24 brings trick-or-treaters to Old Towne Orange’s charming plaza. Merchants pass out candy, and there’s a costume parade, games, and entertainment at this annual event. A short walk from the festival is this Craftsman-style home built in 1924. Enter through the front porch framed by square columns and into the living room with several windows offering plenty of natural light. The home features a master suite, an additional bedroom with a view of the backyard, and a bathroom with white shaker cabinets and a clawfoot tub with a shower. Wisdom from … A haunted house creator

Heather Luther and her husband started Fullerton’s haunted house The 17th Door in 2015. This year, they expect 27,500 attendees.

What it is …
The attraction is a cross between a theatrical horror performance and a typical walk-through haunted house. Guests are locked in each room while a 90-second interactive scene plays out. The actors can touch them, they may get electrically shocked (or) exposed to extreme temperatures, and we use live bugs. Guests may find themselves alone, trapped in very small spaces, wet, or buried under 100,000 ball-pit balls!

Safety first …
Guests have to sign a waiver before entering and can use the safe word “mercy” to be removed from any room. We monitor the rooms with surveillance cameras (and) security guards, and we incorporate safety training for our cast members. Guests can purchase a “Mercy Pendant” for $5 more, which helps protect them from electrical shocks, coming into contact with bugs, and being separated from their group.

This year …
We pride ourselves on redoing at least two-thirds of the attraction each year to keep the show fresh. Don’t wear expensive shoes—they likely won’t survive in room four, “The Showers.”
