DUI Suspect Tosses Weapon During Wild Chase That Goes From Valley To Anaheim

ANAHEIM (CBSLA)  — A DUI suspect led police on a wild chase Saturday evening from the San Fernando Valley to Anaheim.

The pursuit began around 8:30 p.m. and lasted about an hour, said the CHP.

In addition to the DUI suspect, the car contained two passengers.

At Ball Road and Disneyland Drive, the driver pulled over and made a run for it.

He was quickly apprehended after he raced over to a car that was stopped in traffic and pulled on the door handle. The suspect was ordered to the ground where he was taken into custody.

Two passengers remained in the car and were also taken into custody, police said.

The chase often exceeded 100 miles per hour, authorities said. Also during the chase, authorities allege the driver threw a weapon out the window. The unidentified weapon was recovered police said.

No Food For A Week, But Missing 75-Year-Old Hiker Is Rebounding Fast

PASADENA (CBSLA)  — Eugene Jo hasn’t eaten in a week, he was stranded in the wilderness and he had to drink out of a creek.

When he was found today — after missing for nearly a week — he was weak and said he could barely roll over to yell for help.

But that was this morning and this is now.

“He wanted a hot meal —  immediately,” said Janet Henderson who works with both Montrose Search and Rescue and Huntington Memorial Hospital where Jo is recuperating.

Jo was lost for seven days in the Angeles National Forest. Photos of Jo recovering in the hospital Sunday evening were provided exclusively to CBS2/KCAL9.

He was found in reasonably good shape for a 75-year-old man who hadn’t eaten in days.  (Last week, Jo’s age was given as 73). Friends say he is former military and stays active.

He had a few scrapes, but CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills said “nothing major, two small scratches.”

“Condition is great. He is awake, alert, talking, making some jokes and having a great reunion right now with his family,” Henderson said.

Jo was airlifted to the hospital after being found in Devil’s Canyon — an area in the mountains above Duarte, Bradbury and Monrovia.

Finally, this morning, he heard the faint sound of rescuers. He wasn’t sure they saw him or knew if he was there.

“He said it took everything he had to roll over on his hands and knees and yell for help. And that’s when the rescuers heard him,” says Henderson.

“We’ve been pretty worried about him,” says Jason Urizar, Jo’s neighbor in Gardena.

Friends, family and neighbors have been monitoring the search for Jo every day. CBS2/KCAL9 was able to give Urizar the good news that Jo was found and alive.

“I’m so happy, my wife and I, like he’s so helpful around the building,” Urizar says, “He does all the gardening and he doesn’t have to. He’s just a nice guy.”

His family told reporters he would not give up.

He got lost on the trail after lagging behind his fellow hikers. Eventually, he found himself all alone. He endured hot days and cold nights. At night, he slept by rocks that were warmed by the sun during the day.

Volunteers came from all over California to aid in the search.

And it wasn’t an easy one because Jo didn’t stay put.

“One of the biggest things we tell hikers is if they get separated or lost from their group is to sit still. Somebody will come to that point last scene where they last seen where they last saw you,” Henderson says.

And this should come as no surprised. Jo told his friends and family — no more hiking for him.

Video: Highlight’s from Mater Dei’s victory over St. John Bosco in 2019 Battle at the Beach

Albano: JSerra linebackers impress at Battle at the Beach; top running back transfers to Mater Dei

HUNTINGTON BEACH – If there was one position group that stood out Saturday as the most imposing at the Battle at the Beach, it might have been JSerra’s linebackers.

The Lions’ foursome of sophomore Malaki Te’o (5-11, 237), junior Jaden Genova (6-0, 205), junior Champion Johnson (6-2, 220) and senior Keegan Netherton (6-1, 215) showcased physical size and athleticism during a pool-play game against Centennial of Corona.

Genova returned an interception for a touchdown while Netherton added an interception in a 35-12 victory at Edison.

Johnson is a transfer from The Bishop’s in La Jolla. He also is a standout wrestler.

In other JSerra news, new quarterback General Booty looked solid against the Huskies. The junior tossed a long TD to sophomore wide receiver Keyan Burnett.

Junior Earnest McDaniel is a junior slot receiver who looks vastly improved. He caught a touchdown on a short post route. He has been offered by Nevada.

Cornerbacks Zamajay Duncan and Samuel Green – both juniors – played like a strong tandem. Duncan also play wide receiver caught a touchdown pass from Booty.

Duncan emerged last season but appears improved.

TOP RUNNING BACK TRANSFERS TO MATER DEI

The Monarchs’ running back position again looks dynamic for a combination of reasons.

Speedy Narbonne running back Marceese Yetts (5-9, 170) has enrolled at Mater Dei, Monarchs coach Bruce Rollinson confirmed Saturday at the Battle at the Beach.

Yetts, a junior, was recently offered by Kansas and also holds offers from Syracuse and BYU among others.

Junior Cameron Leofa (5-10, 228) is back after an injured-shortened 2018.

And Quincy Craig is a sophomore running back who Rollinson is high on.

As Mater Dei has shown in recent seasons, it requires much more than carrying the ball from running backs. The Monarchs asked standouts such as Shakobe Harper and Sean Dollars to block and catch the ball out of the backfield.

Considering those demands and the physical teams on the schedule, Mater Dei appears to have intriguing options at running back for 2019.

In other Mater Dei news, senior Kody Epps was the Monarchs’ top receiver in a 26-19 victory against Narbonne.

LA HABRA’S RYAN ZANELLI DOWN TO TWO COLLEGES

La Habra senior quarterback Ryan Zanelli said he has narrowed his college choices to Yale and Penn and could commit before the season starts for the Highlanders.

“I’m kind ready to focus on my senior year,” said Zanelli, who carries a 4.0 grade-point average.

Zanelli could follow the footsteps of former Edison standout Griffin O’Connor is he commits to Yale or Nick Robinson of JSerra if he heads Penn.

In other La Habra news, junior cornerback Bryce Phillips grabbed two interceptions in the fight-marred victory against Cathedral.

The Highlanders will be back in action July 13 at the Mission Viejo tournament.

SERVITE, EDISON WIDE RECEIVERS SHINE

Servite sophomore Tetairoa “TMAC” McMillan and Edison senior Cole Koffler put on a show in the teams’ tournament opener.

McMillan, one of the most athletic wide outs from the county on Saturday, caught three TDs, including a spectacular, leaping grab at the back of the end zone for the first score. Strong-armed sophomore quarterback Noah Fifita put the ball high enough that only McMillan could grab it.

Koffler caught two touchdowns from strong-armed junior Braeden Boyles, including one a deep pass down the middle.

Servite tight end Jake Overman (6-4, 235) also impressed with several catches, including a TD, in the Friars’ 33-25 victory.

TRILIAN HARRIS TRANSFERS TO CENTENNIAL OF CORONA

Former Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo quarterback Trilian Harris, a junior, has enrolled at Centennial of Corona.

2-Year-Old Boy Dies From E. Coli Linked To San Diego Fair, 3 Others Sickened

SAN DIEGO (CBSLA) — E. coli bacteria that has been linked to the San Diego County Fair has killed one child and sickened three others, health officials said Saturday.

According to San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, four children, ages 2 to 13, visited the fair from June 8 to 15 and had symptoms from June 10 to June 16.

A two-year-old boy was hospitalized and later died on June 24 from E. coli related complications. The three other children did not require hospitalization.

Each case was being investigated separately, but each child was said to have been in contact with animals at the fair.

The San Diego County Fair closed public access to all animal areas, including the petting zoo.

Watts Residents March, Rally For Annual ‘Stop The Violence’ Gathering

WATTS (CBSLA)  — Residents of Watts marched, rallied and spread their message Saturday.

The message was one of anti-violence. It was all about spreading love.

CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Joy Benedict talked to some of the organizers and some of the participants about the importance of the 16th annual event.

As they walked, they chanted and said enough to violence.

“And when do we want it? Now!”

No one would argue with this premise. It was a plea they took through the streets, tired of the grim statistics and the pain and death.

They also chanted, “Stop the murder!”

Organizers and marchers stopped on every corner, in every neighborhood. The group of activists made sure their voices were heard — many did not need bullhorns, but those also helped.

“We lost a lot of people through the violence,” says Kandy Brown.

She grabbed her daughters and brought them to the rally — to let them know they deserved more, they deserve better.

“Because I  have children and I want them to have better values than just violence,” says Brown.

The annual “Stop the Violence” march started at Watts Towers and ambled through the community as dozens chanted and carried sign.

The desire to stop the violence is profound. The message they were spreading was so simple, it’s scary.

“It’s much easier for a child to get a gun than he can get a job. And it shouldn’t be that way,” says resident James Farmer.

Regardless of where you live, it’s a message for everyone to rally around.

“It’s  important to me personally because I have grand kids, you know, and I wanna be able to make sure they can live and go out to enjoy the parks and enjoy they self,” Farmer says.

Organizers started the march after a 12-year-old boy — a visitor — was shot and killed in this community and folks living here said enough is enough.

“He didn’t live in Los Angeles. He was from Texas and he was visiting his grandmother and there was a drive-by shooting,” Lydia Friend recalls.

Friend organized the Women of Watts Service Group and then this annual march and rally.

“We’re crying out saying stop! Stop the violence. Let’s have some love in our hearts. Let’s show love for one another,” Friend says.

Love and a sense of community this group clearly wants.  They just pray their neighbors are listening.

Justice Department Indicts Another Parent In College Admission Scandal

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The Department of Justice has indicted another parent — the 51st person — in the college admission scandal that rocked some of the country’s most prestigious universities.

According to the government, 59-year-old Jeff Bizzack is expected to plead guilty to paying $250,000 to alleged ringleader Rick Singer to get his son into the University of Southern California as a fake volleyball recruit.

“He deeply regrets what he did and especially the effect it will have on his son,” Seth Berman, Bizzack’s attorney, said in a statement. “His son knew nothing of Mr. Bizzack’s actions. Mr. Bizzack will do his best to make up for this mistake and apologizes to USC and its hard working students.”

The indictment comes just one day after Steven Masera, a bookkeeper who laundered bribes, and Ali Khosroshahin, a former USC women’s soccer coach, plead guilty to racketeering conspiracy in Boston.

RELATED: College Admissions Bribery Scandal: Who’s Who

Laurie Levenson, a professor at Loyola Marymount University and a former federal prosecutor, said even more could be coming.

“As they continue to prosecute more cases, they continue to get more information and prosecute more people,” she said.

With his guilty plea, the government is recommending Bizzack spend nine months in prison followed by supervised probation. He will also pay a $75,000 fine and will have to pay restitution.

“If you come forward and cooperate, you’re not going to be hammered as much as the people who don’t,” Levenson said.

Bizzack, who is famed surfer Kelly Slater’s business partner, lives in Solana Beach.

The truth about horse racing deaths

Each time a young horse stepped onto the Santa Anita racetrack this past season, all bets were off.

The stakes were high and the horse’s survival was not guaranteed.

By season’s end, 30 horses died at that racetrack.

And although it was nowhere near Santa Anita’s deadliest season, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation allowing the California Horse Racing Board to suspend racing licenses to protect the health and safety of horses and riders.

THE LOVELY BONES

A horse has 205 bones in its body; 80 of them are in the legs.

The bones of a mature horse are very strong but very light, enabling it to run fast.

Many horses begin racing at age 3 when the skeletal system is still growing and unprepared to handle the pressures of running on a hard track at high speeds. This puts the horse at risk.

A. Immature bone: The skeleton starts off in the fetus as cartilage or fibrous connective tissue.

B. Growing bone: The long bones increase in length at the ends where new cartilage is laid down.

C. Mature bone: Bone growth ceases and the epiphyseal plate converts into a fine epiphyseal line, making it stronger.

WHEN BONES BREAK

The horse’s legs have evolved to sustain its massive weight for long periods, and the horse can sleep standing up. If a horse injures one of its legs, it creates serious complications.

1. Muscle and skeletal injuries account for 80% of deaths at California racetracks. Most injuries are caused by a misstep on an unstable track surface or extreme stress.

2. When the leg breaks, often vital tissue (tendons and nerves) surrounding the bone is torn, causing an open fracture.

3. Blood supply to lower part of extremities is restricted, causing more complications in healing.

4. Weight, movement, infection, pain and costs are major factors that work against a horse in recovery.

LAMINITIS

Laminae are the fibrous tissues that attach the hoof to the leg.

When a leg is broken, the horse shifts its weight on the other three legs, which inflames the hoofs, causing laminitis.

Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, died from laminitis following his breakdown at the Preakness Stakes. It is one of the most common and deadly diseases in equines.

THE FINAL MOMENTS ON THE TRACK

A chase vehicle follows the horses during each race.

When a horse falls, the medical team is on scene within seconds to assess the severity of injury.

If the injury is severe enough, the horse is euthanized on the spot, loaded onto the vehicle and carried away.

Uber Driver Catches Fatal Long Beach Hit-And-Run On Dash Cam

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Police are looking for the driver involved in a fatal Long Beach hit-and-run captured by an Uber driver’s dash cam.

“It was pretty gruesome,” Brian Fritz said of the accident. “I saw it happen right in front of me.”

The woman, identified as 30-year-old Elyssa Negrette of Wilmington, died from her injuries. The man with her, who police have not identified, is in critical condition.

On June 25, close to midnight, Fritz’s dash cam caught a car hitting two pedestrians in the crosswalk on Pacific Avenue near Burnett Street.

“It hit them from the corner, they kind of popped up and they flew about 10-15 feet that way and the car continued going at the same rate of speed, didn’t even slow down,” he said.

Fritz also said the driver appeared to be speeding before the collision.

Since the accident, police have placed signs at the intersection warning drivers of pedestrians crossing the road.

“I’ve actually been more cautious, because even though I wasn’t the only that hit anybody, I’ve been opening my eyes more,” Fritz said. “You always have to be prepared to stop.”

Long Beach police are now asking for the public’s help in finding the driver of the car, only described as white and possible four-door.

Costco Shooting Case Handed Over To Riverside DA

CORONA (CBSLA) — The case of an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer who shot and killed a mentally disabled man inside a Corona Costo is now in the hands of the Riverside District Attorney’s office.

Corona police Thursday said in a statement that they had completed their investigation and handed over the June 14 incident in which officer Salvador Sanchez shot and killed 32-year-old Kenneth French and critically wounded French’s parents.

Attorneys for Sanchez and French disagree on what led up to the fatal shooting. Sanchez’s attorney says the off-duty cop ‘feared for his life’ after being knocked unconscious. An attorney for the French family called the assertion that Sanchez was ever unconscious absurd and said he believed Sanchez “totally lost it.”

Riverside District Attorney Mike Hestrin confirmed that his office did receive the case, but said it was handed over without specific recommendations. Hestrin’s office will now evaluate the case, conduct and additional investigation it deems necessary and determine if there should be charges.

Orange County Fire Authority gets help from SCE to try out helicopters that can fight fires at night

Nighttime aerial firefighting equipment that helped knock down Australian wildfires last year will be tested in Orange County over the next five months.

Starting July 1, the Orange County Fire Authority will run a pilot program with two special helicopters: one that does reconnaissance of ground conditions, any obstacles such as power lines, and where the nearest water sources are, and a second chopper that will be “the first-ever nighttime, hover-filling tanker in the U.S.,” authority spokeswoman Colleen Windsor said.

Firefighting aircraft that can work at night have been responding to wildland fires in Orange County through mutual aid agreements, but the county doesn’t have equipment of its own. Also, officials said existing aircraft in the U.S. aren’t able to refill from open water sources such as ponds and lakes in the dark.

Through a $4 million grant from Southern California Edison, the fire authority will lease the new helicopters from Coulson Aviation – which also provided aircraft for the Australian effort – and the company will provide pilots trained in using night vision goggles and other technology for nighttime flying, an OCFA report said.

“Edison is making significant investments to assist firefighting capabilities across our service area to protect our customers and communities from the ongoing threat of wildfires,” company Vice President of Local Public Affairs Chris Thompson said in a prepared statement.

“This most recent project is an opportunity for Edison to accelerate the first U.S. deployment of this innovative firefighting technology.”

For about five months, the new aircraft will be on call to help fight fires anywhere in Edison’s 50,000-square-mile service territory, Windsor said.

Temperatures and winds tend to drop at night and humidity often goes up, making it a “missed opportunity” for firefighters to get control of a blaze when weather conditions are on their side, Windsor said.

Anaheim, where residents were evacuated and homes burned during 2017’s Canyon Fire 2, now relies on Calfire for air support, Anaheim Fire and Rescue spokesman Daron Wyatt said, but the Edison-funded helicopters “will benefit everybody in the county.”

LA City Council Vetoes Automated Trucks At Port Of LA

According to International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 13, which represents the dockworkers, tens of thousands of port employees acquire shift assignments each day, and those opportunities may be reduced between 500 to 700 per day.The council’s vote sends the issue back to the Harbor Commission for further discussion. But APM officials appear poised to move ahead with the automated equipment anyway.

16(© Copyright 2019 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. City News Service contributed to this report.)

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – At a packed meeting, the Los Angeles City Council Friday vetoed a controversial permit which would have allowed for the use of automated driverless trucks at one of the Port of L.A.’s largest terminals.
The equipment would be used at the port operated by Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals.
Hundreds of dockworkers packed the council chamber Friday for the discussion. The dockworkers, represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 13, chanted “no robots” outside City Hall prior to the council meeting.
Whether the council’s action will have any effect remains unclear, with shipping company officials saying they are contractually permitted to bring in automated equipment, regardless of a city permit.
According to its permit request, APM says it will spend .5 million to install “electric power vehicle charging stations, racking systems for electric power refrigerated containers, limited installation of antennae poles, and related power conduits that will allow the existing diesel-powered container handling equipment to be replaced with zero- and near zero-emissions yard equipment.”
The council unanimously vetoed an action by the L.A. Board of Harbor Commissioners, which last week authorized the Danish firm Maersk — the world’s biggest container shipping company and one of the major cargo operators at the port — to bring in several automated cargo carriers that move shipping containers between ships and trucks at its Pier 400 terminal.
The Port of L.A. has been the busiest container port in the U.S. since the year 2000.

La Brea Tar Pits Unveils ‘Instagram-Worthy’ Art Installation

MID-WILSHIRE (CBSLA) — The La Brea Tar Pits unveiled its newest interactive art installation that will open Friday for the public.

(CBSLA)

The work, titled “Second Home Serpentine Pavilion,” was designed by Spanish architects Lucia Cano and Jose Selgas of Selascano as an installation for everyone to enjoy.

“What we’re hoping will happen is that people will come in and be inspired,” said Sam Aldenton, co-founder of Second Home.

The colorful and twisting display invites people in with a kaleidoscope effect as lights bounce from one wall to the next, and museum officials are hoping it will draw more people into the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits that highlights what makes the area unique.

The pavilion made its debut in London’s Hyde Park in 2015, and this summer the installation will host film screenings, dances and more in LA.

“We’re all big fans of popular culture, and people want to come here and share their experiences of it,” Aldenton said. “And that’s brilliant.”

Tickets are free, but must be reserved on the website for the install

ation. The installation will remain open through November.

Police Arrest Man Accused Of Brandishing Knife In Road Rage Incident

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Police have arrested a man in connection with a recent road rage incident in Long Beach that was caught on camera by a passerby.

According to Long Beach police, 33-year-old Matthew John Cable of Long Beach was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and was being held at the Long Beach City Jail on $30,601 bail.

The video shot by Greg Danner showed a man pulling out a knife twice — once with the door open pointed at the other vehicle. Seconds later, the man is seen holding it up to his face. Then, Danner said, the man took off — but not before approaching Danner himself.

“When I was giving the footage to the passengers in the car he had threatened, he came walking back up the sidewalk to convince me that I hadn’t seen what I had just seen,” Danner said.

That’s when he started to record again.

“Do you think you can get away before I take that phone from you? Do you think you can get away before I take that phone from you?” the man says, walking closer to Danner. Suddenly, he backs off.

Sparks play with improved energy, defeat Las Vegas Aces to end slide

LOS ANGELES — More than anything, Sparks coach Derek Fisher said he wanted the Sparks to fight harder than they had in their previous four games – all losses.

“The only takeaway that I really care about tonight,” he said before his Sparks defeated the Las Vegas Aces 86-74 on Thursday night, “is how many times you see Sparks players fighting and knocking people around and being really physical and competitive.”

Before 10,295 fans at Staples Center, the Sparks (5-6) played sufficiently gritty, animated – and downright joyful – basketball to beat the surging, talented Las Vegas Aces in a game that got, as the coach ordered, a bit chippy during the second half when rookie center Kalani Brown and Aces star Liz Cambage got tangled up.

“I think,” Sparks forward Chiney Ogwumike said with a chuckle, “we’re finding out that we’re a team with an edge. We’re not finesse. We need somebody to get knuck and buck, you know what I’m saying?

“We need Candace to start telling people off, we need Nneka to get turnt, that’s what we need to sort of hone us in … we’re not nice girls, Disney princesses. (We’re) some tough ladies, and it’s just cool, because that’s who we are. Like Coach said, ‘We’re not Hollywood where we can walk in and be Showtime. We’re gonna be grit and grind.’”

Brown proved Ogwumike’s theory, though she seemed to surprise herself with her reaction during a sequence in the third quarter, when Cambage pulled her hair as the two battled for position near the basket (Cambage was assessed a flagrant foul). In response, Brown shoved Cambage (and received a technical foul).

“She told me she was gonna pull my hair,” an amused Brown explained. “I just didn’t think she was really gonna do it. And she really did it! So my reflex was to push. … but that shows you, ‘Welcome to the league.’ Another welcome-to-the-league moment, which I’m starting to think is not a positive phrase.”

The Sparks’ already stoked energy was further heightened thereafter – helped by Riquna Williams’ pull-up jumper to beat the third-quarter buzzer and give the Sparks a 66-53 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Williams extended the Sparks’ advantage to 76-57 with a pair of quick 3-pointers. Las Vegas (6-5) – which blew out the Sparks 83-70 in the season opener for both teams on May 26 – closed to within 11, but another Williams 3-pointer made it 81-67 with 3:31 left. She finished with 18 points, going 7 for 16 from the floor, including 3 for 6 from beyond the arc.

Parker’s 3-pointer with 59.4 seconds left gave her 18 (on 6-for-12 shooting) and put the Sparks ahead 84-72. An Aces’ shot clock violation and a Chelsea Gray (18 points, six assists and no turnovers) jumper sealed the victory and stopped the Sparks’ slide.

With Nneka Ogwumike (rest) and Alexis Jones (knee) unavailable, and Williams starting for the first time this season, stepping in for Alana Beard, Fisher’s continued lineup experimentation yielded the desired results. What helped most, Fisher said, was the fact that the team had a couple of days of intense practices to reorient itself to the required level of competitive effort.

“For us, over a 10-day period of five games and travel, we just got soft in a sense, in terms of physical ability to sustain effort,” Fisher said.

“It’s almost like being on a fitness program, if you take a few days off and you try to go back in the gym, it just feels different. Even if you’ve been working out for six months in a row, you take four or five days, off, you’re just not the same and I think practice for us, we’re finding out, is gonna be a good thing.”

The Sparks were active defensively, finishing with 11 steals – including a couple for the record books: Two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Alana Beard had six steals, including her 700th, something only two other players in league history have done; Candace Parker recorded four, including her 400th.

The Sparks finished the first half ahead 40-34, energized entering the half thanks to Brown’s rebound and putback at the buzzer.

“It’s that cliche, ‘We may not have it all together, but together we have it all,’” said Chiney Ogwumike, who finished with six points and 10 rebounds. “Like, we really don’t have it all together. But together, if we’re on the same page and playing hard, we can win, right?

“So today, I think everyone felt it and it was kind of funny because you could feel the desperation in the fans. Everyone was like, ‘Now we’re on a run! We’re on a run!’ Everyone was just hyped. And we know that what we’re going through is not normal, but it’s part of growing pains. And that’s what makes nights like tonight worth it and fun.”

‘Move Over’: Police Advise Drivers What To Do When A Pursuit Is Nearby

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The Southland is known for wild police pursuits, making them almost impossible for drivers to avoid.

California Highway Patrol is advising drivers on what to do when they are caught in the middle of an active police pursuit.

According to Officer Ramberto Salcido, drivers should never get involved in an on-going pursuit.

“If you see one coming from behind you, they’re probably going at a pretty good speed, probably moving faster than you are,” Salcido told CBSLA’s, Amy Johnson. “If you can move over to the right, I suggest you do and make sure to turn on your turn signal while you’re doing it. If they’re coming really close, we probably suggest just staying in your lane.  ”

Recently, there have been pursuits where suspects have opened fire at police, leaving innocent drivers caught in the middle. Salcido advised it is best to not get involved in the pursuit.

“A lot of people want to barricade or box-in the suspect, or maybe run up to them and give them a handshake, just don’t get involved. You don’t know what that person is wanted for or what he’s capable of.”

According to Salcido, if the driver in a pursuit leaves their vehicle and tries to get into your car, it is best to raise your windows, call 911, and pull away if you can.

The CHP said it is important to be alert if you encounter a pursuit.

They ask that you turn down the radio and crack your windows so you can hear if officers are giving instructions.

Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger will start All-Star Game, won’t participate in Home Run Derby

DENVER — Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger will be in the starting lineup for this year’s All-Star Game in Cleveland. But he won’t be in the Home Run Derby.

The leading overall vote-getter in the “Primary” voting of this year’s revamped All-Star selection process, Bellinger was one of the top three in the “Starters” voting conducted Wednesday and Thursday online. Bellinger, Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich and Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. will be the National League’s starting outfield.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will also manage the NL team again this year and said he would line that group up with Bellinger in center field (the position he played much of last season before moving to right field this year), Yelich in right and Acuña in left.

It will be Bellinger’s second All-Star Game in his three big-league seasons but his first start. As a rookie in 2017, he was named to the NL team as a reserve and also participated in the Home Run Derby at Marlins Park.

He said he has declined an invitation to take part in the Derby this year.

“They already called and I said, ‘No, not this year,’” Bellinger said, adding that it wasn’t because he didn’t enjoy the experience in 2017. In fact, he called it “the best part” of his All-Star participation.

“I loved it,” he said. “I had my dad there (Clay Bellinger pitched to his son in the derby). It was great. This year, I just want to have that first day to be off and enjoy everything. Things can get pretty hectic.”

Bellinger said he has watched the Derby in years past and saw all the All-Stars who aren’t participating laying on the grass in front of the dugouts and having a great time.

“That’s going to be me this year,” he said, acknowledging that he might make a different choice next year when the All-Star Game will be played at Dodger Stadium.

It is possible he could have a Dodgers teammate to root on. Joc Pederson (who lost in the final to Todd Frazier at the 2015 All-Star Game in Cincinnati) currently is tied for ninth in the NL with 20 home runs. He said he hasn’t received an invitation yet. Like Bellinger, Pederson said he enjoyed participating in the Derby.

“It was so much fun,” he said. “It was an incredible experience.”

ROSTER MOVES

A day after making his major-league debut, Tony Gonsolin was returned to Triple-A. Left-hander Caleb Ferguson went with him. Ferguson has a 5.48 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 22 appearances with the Dodgers this season.

“The fastball command and the ability to strike that needs to be more consistent. And he understands that,” Roberts said of Ferguson’s second demotion this season.

“The ability to strike the curveball hasn’t been there for quite some time. I don’t think it’s been there this year. Although you have a good fastball, if it’s not located where it should be more times than not, guys are going to hit it. That’s kind of where we’re at right now. He’ll be fine. He’s just got to go out there and continue to execute.”

In their places, the Dodgers recalled lefty reliever Zac Rosscup and infielder Edwin Rios from Triple-A Oklahoma City. It is Rios’ first trip to the big leagues and Roberts said he could start at third or first during the series in Colorado.

WATER-LOGGED

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen has twice had episodes of atrial fibrillation during trips to Colorado resulting in heart procedures (including the most recent one last November). His doctors believe dehydration at Denver’s altitude might have triggered the episodes.

“Well – if you’re a human being, you’re going to think about it. I’m not going to lie,” he said. “I’m sending my EKG to my doctors to make sure I’m fine. I check my EKGs (on his cell phone) every day.”

And Jansen has taken precautions to avoid dehydration – eight liters of it every day.

“That’s what he (his cardiologist) said – drink a lot of water,” Jansen said. “I’m tired of (going to the bathroom), believe me. Eight liters of water is a lot of water.”

Woman Who Lost Unborn Child After Being Shot Is Arrested, Alleged Shooter Goes Free

3d letter sign

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (CBS Local) — An Alabama woman who allegedly started a fight that led to the death of her unborn baby has been indicted for manslaughter, but the woman who allegedly shot her won’t be charged.Amanda Reyes, the executive director of the Yellowhammer Fund, a group that gained national attention after the passage of Alabama’s new abortion law, vowed to assist Jones’ defense.
“We commit ourselves to making sure that Marshae is released from jail on bond, assisting with her legal representation, and working to ensure that she gets justice for the multiple attacks that she has endured,” she continued.
“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,” Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting, AL.com reported. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.” A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Jones on a manslaughter charge, according to AL.com. She was taken into custody on Wednesday and held at the Jefferson County jail in Birmingham on ,000 bond.
“The state of Alabama has proven yet again that the moment a person becomes pregnant their sole responsibility is to produce a live, healthy baby and that it considers any action a pregnant person takes that might impede in that live birth to be a criminal act,” Reyes said in a statement.
Jemison was initially charged with manslaughter, but the charge was dropped after the grand jury failed to indict her.
Jemison allegedly shot Jones in the stomach during the argument, which police say was over the unborn baby’s father. The unborn baby did not survive.
Marshae Jones, 28, was five months pregnant when she attacked Ebony Jemison, 23, outside Dollar General store in Pleasant Grove in December of last year, according to authorities.

Safety Experts Urge Residents To Leave Fireworks To The Pros

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Safety experts across the nation are urging people to leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals this Fourth of July holiday.

To drive this point home, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recreated some accidents — from minor burns to fatal injuries — that can occur when fireworks are improperly handled. Last year, 9,100 people went to the emergency room with fireworks-related injuries and at least five died.

“If you’re going to use fireworks, have a bucket of water or a hose handy,” Ann Marie Buerkle, CPSC acting chair, said. “And, most importantly, don’t give fireworks to children.”

And in Los Angeles, officials took to social media to remind residents that fireworks are never safe, never sane and always illegal within the city limits.

“Those who use, possess or transport any type of firework may be subject to criminal prosecution — or worse yet, painful and debilitating injury,” Brian Humphrey, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said in a statement. “Personal fireworks use is also known to terrify pets, and can cause needless stress for combat veterans.”

Instead of risking injury or fines, the city is encouraging residents to attend any of a number of professional displays.

San Bernardino among 15 cities that failed to report its salaries to state

San Bernardino was the largest of five Southern California cities that failed to report their employees’ salaries and benefits this year in violation of a state transparency law.

Colton, Murrieta, Artesia and Signal Hill also were among 15 cities statewide that did not comply with the law by an April 30 deadline, according to the California State Controller’s Office.

By law, cities have to report the payroll information to the state controller annually. Those figures are publicly released in a database with the employees’ names removed. The state controller began publishing compensation data in response to outrageous salaries uncovered in the city of Bell.

All of the noncompliant cities could face fines of up to $5,000. They may also have to foot the bill for travel expenses and staff time if the state controller sends its own team down to extract the data, according to Taryn Kinney, a spokeswoman for Controller Betty Yee.

The state Controller’s Office attempted to contact San Bernardino several times about submitting its data to the public pay database, Kinney said.

“Our staff have not had any communication with the city,” Kinney said in an email.

Bill Essayli, chief of staff for San Bernardino Mayor John Valdivia, said city officials only learned they had missed the deadline when contacted by a reporter this week. The city is in the process of hiring a new finance director and the annual reporting was overlooked during the transition, he said.

“It was just an oversight,” he said. “We’re working with the Controller’s Office to get the report filed as quickly as possible.”

Colton, also in San Bernardino County, submitted the required information in February and has not heard from the state controller since then, according to City Manager Bill Smith. He was not aware that his city had been listed as “noncompliant” by the state agency.

“We did file it and we have confirmation from the Controller’s Office that we did file it,” he said.

According to Kinney, the state controller needs to verify the accuracy of certain figures provided by Colton before the data can be published. The state has been unable to reach city employees so far.

In Riverside County, Murrieta similarly did not respond to questions from the state controller after it submitted its records earlier this year, Kinney said. The city also is listed as noncompliant.

City officials did not return a call for comment.

In Los Angeles County, Signal Hill and Artesia missed the deadline, but are now working with the state to get their reports online. Artesia submitted its data on Thursday morning and it is currently under review. If approved, it will be published online next week.

Signal Hill was unable to submit their report because of an issue with its payroll system and is expected to submit its report once the problem is resolved, according to Kinney.

‘Ammogeddon:’ Gun Owners Flock To Stores Before Prop 63 Takes Effect

LAGUNA NIGUEL (CBSLA) — The countdown is on for what’s being called “Ammogeddon.”

At On Target Range in Laguna Niguel, a clock blinks with each passing second until Prop 63, requiring background checks for ammunition purchases in California, goes into effect July 1. The law was overwhelmingly passed by voters in 2016.

The governor and attorney general have reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enforce the law. But some gun enthusiasts say they’re confused about what will happen come next Monday, when the new system is implemented.

“Am I going to be put on a watch list? Does it matter how much ammo I buy?” one man asked.

On Target Owner Gregg Bouslog says he’s doing his best to educate customers amid a rush to buy ammunition.

“You can buy a self-registration for $19 …. You can come in here and we will do that for you,” he explained. “That’s $19. That puts you in the system. But each time after that you have to pay $1 to buy ammunition,” he said, referring to a processing fee for each purchase if a customer is in the system as an approved buyer.

Still, Bouslog says, no one really knows how long customers might have to wait to be cleared. The software to run the background checks hasn’t arrived yet.

“Right now we’re told — just an hour ago — that the software to do this process is supposed to be available at 7:00 Monday morning. I have no training. I have no idea what it looks like,” he explained.

The new law aims to weed out felons and owners of illegal weapons. However, some are skeptical.

“The only people that you can really scrutinize are law-abiding citizens,” said gun owner Ralph Perovano. “We are the only ones that have lived in the community any length of time and it’s very easy to find if we have a criminal record or not.”

There is no limit on much ammunition a person can buy under the new law; however, purchasers must have a valid California ID so no one from out-of-state will be able to buy ammunition in California.

There is one exception, however: if you go to places like On Target to use the gun range, you will be able to get ammunition on the spot.

Parents express anger about toxic landfill near Edison High in Huntington Beach at school board meeting

Facing dozens of frustrated residents at the board meeting Tuesday, June 25, Huntington Beach Union High School District Superintendent Clint Harwick tried to allay concerns from the start about toxic materials being near Edison High.

An environmental consulting firm is conducting extensive tests at a shuttered landfill near the school, Harwick assured the audience. Results will be posted on the district website soon, he said.

“They did some cursory tests first to get summer school open and then they put some canisters out that have some greater readings, and we’re waiting for that report,” Harwick said in his opening remarks.

After a cleanup began in February at the 38-acre Ascon landfill, neighbors complained about dust and fumes permeating their homes. Many attributed flu-like symptoms, rashes, bronchitis and other ailments to the excavation of contaminated dirt.

The project was halted indefinitely on June 6 by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control until dust-control measures can be implemented.

Despite a public outcry, summer school at Edison began on schedule June 18.

Seventeen speakers at this week’s meeting took turns criticizing board members for what they called a lack of communication and transparency.

One woman said she had called and emailed the Edison principal, assistant principals and board members with questions. “I never heard a word back,” she said.

A few speakers  pointed out that most of the board members have served for more than 20 years. To a burst of applause, a woman whose daughter attends Edison said, “If you don’t feel you can help us, please retire.”

Some voiced fears about their children practicing sports on Edison fields, and even demanded that students be relocated permanently.

“My son has participated and enjoyed tennis camp every summer at Edison, but now I don’t feel it’s worth his health,” Elana Greville said.

Others complained about the over all state of the Edison campus.

“I walked around there recently and I was appalled and disgusted,” said Robyn Slader, who herself graduated from Edison. “The pool is a disgrace, the campus is covered in tons of trash. Huntington Beach High is pristine. It’s incredible the schools are in the same city.

“I was blinded by alumni loyalty, but now I am pulling my daughter from Edison,” Slader added. “It has been terribly neglected.”

Compton-based Forensic Analytical Consulting Services has been conducting tests at the Ascon site, Harwick said.

The landfill became a dumping ground for debris from oil fields in 1938 – three decades before Edison High opened nearby on Magnolia Street, not far from the Pacific Coast Highway. Starting in 1971, the site gained abandoned vehicles and construction materials.

Ascon was labeled hazardous seven years after it was shuttered in 1984. The first major effort to clean the site was launched in 2010, with 100,000 tons of tar-like material removed.

L.A. City Council Member Calls On State To ‘Put Skin In The Game’ And End Homeless Crisis

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A Los Angeles City Council member is calling on the state to help end the city’s homeless crisis.

The city council earlier this month received the grim numbers from this year’s homeless count. The heartbreaking numbers, which reveal nearly 59,000 people are living on the street, boil down to this: the number of people lifted out of homelessness and into permanent housing has doubled. But, at the same time, on average 17 more people become homeless each and every day.

L.A. City Council member and chair of the city’s Homelessness and Poverty Committee, Mitch O’Farrell, says city and county voters have done their part by passing two measures that bring hundreds of millions of dollars to combat homelessness in L.A. City and L.A. County. Now, he says, it’s time for the state to pony up.

“We’ve put skin in the game — voters, residents — we’ve all put skin in the game here in Los Angeles. We’ve created the systems to produce this housing; now, we need the state to match us,” he said.

Council member O’Farrell is also calling on the state to pass new laws that will allow the city to stabilize rents in newer buildings and prevent owners from demolishing existing rent-stabilized buildings, throwing out their tenants, then building new condominiums which cannot be rent-stabilized.

O’Farrell’s remarks follow just weeks after the county’s 2019 Biennial Homeless Count showed the number of homeless people in L.A. County surged by 12 percent over the last year. Almost three-fourths of those people are sleeping in cars, tents and other makeshift shelters, according to the study.

Video Of High School Students Using Racial Slurs, Apparent Blackface Circulates Online

LANCASTER (CBSLA) — High school students in Lancaster are facing the wrath of the district and the community after a racist video began surfacing online.

The video, posted to Snapchat and later shared on Twitter, showed a student getting his face painted in what looks like blackface as other students used racial slurs in the background.

High School students in Lancaster face backlash after a racist video surfaced online (credit: Twitter)

It was not immediately clear when the video was made but the screen recording was posted on Twitter several days ago.

Someone in the video can be heard using the n-word and racially-charged language.

The students in the video reportedly attend Quartz Hill High School in Lancaster.

The Antelope Valley Union High School District released a statement that reads in part, “We were recently made aware of a social media video showing a group of teenagers exhibiting deeply offensive, and inexcusable racist behavior. This runs counter to the District’s core values…We are working on identifying those in the video, while including our law enforcement partners, and will take action as deemed appropriate…”

The Lancaster sheriff’s department also released an advisory saying they are investigating the origins of the video.

Panorama City Man Charged With Killing Wife, Injuring Neighbors With Machete

PANORAMA CITY (CBSLA) — A Panorama City man has been charged with killing his wife with a machete and then wounding three neighbors.

David Ernesto Rodriguez, 36, faces one count each of murder, premeditated attempted murder and first-degree burglary, person present, as well as two felony counts each of assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The charges include allegations of using a deadly and dangerous weapon, a machete and causing great bodily injury.

On June 22, Rodriguez is accused of chasing his wife, 32-year-old Karla Rodriguez, out of their apartment on Roscoe Blvd. near Kester Ave. during an argument and then killing her with a machete.

He then allegedly forced entry into his neighbors’ apartment and attacked a husband and wife, along with their 17-year-old son, when he tried to intervene, according to prosecutors.

The adult male victim’s arm, nose and eye were seriously injured by the machete. The female victim’s head was cut and the teen’s hand was seriously wounded, the D.A.’s office stated.

Police arrived and arrested Rodriguez.

He faces a possible maximum sentence of 40 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

Rodriguez was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. Prosecutors are recommending that bail be set at $3.25 million.

Irvine council delays veterans cemetery discussion until July

Irvine officials will wait until next month to decide on one of two proposed sites for an Orange County veterans cemetery.

The City Council pulled the cemetery item from its agenda Tuesday, June 25, and has not yet picked a new date for the discussion.

Councilwoman Melissa Fox had asked the council to consider formally designating the original site proposed on the northern edge of the Orange County Great Park for the cemetery.

Then, late last week, Mayor Christina Shea announced that Great Park developer FivePoint Holdings had offered up to $28 million to help construct the cemetery if the city would scrap plans for a golf course at the park and put the cemetery there instead.

Also on Tuesday, the state Senate Veterans Affairs Committee was expected to discuss a bill from Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva that would move ahead with the northern site, which requires extensive and costly cleanup.

At the same time, the Orange County Grand Jury published a report on Tuesday noting the years-long saga of the search for, and fight over, a veterans cemetery location and funding.

The report concluded that although there’s significant interest in building the cemetery, estimated costs at various proposed sites vary widely, and “competing political and financial interests have caused delays in veterans cemetery site selection.”

Navy veteran Ivan Bishop, who went to Tuesday’s Irvine council meeting only to learn the issue had been taken off the agenda, said veterans he’s spoken with prefer that the cemetery be somewhere on the former El Toro Marine base.

They’d also like to see a decision made, after several years in limbo, he said. “I think a lot of people are just holding ashes, waiting to see where they can go.”

Mueller to testify publicly before House committees July 17

By Mary Clare Jalonick, Eric Tucker and Lisa Mascaro, Associated Press

WASHINGTON >>  Special counsel Robert Mueller has agreed to testify publicly before Congress on July 17 after Democrats issued subpoenas to compel him to appear, the chairmen of two House committees announced Tuesday.

Mueller’s unusual back-to-back testimony in front of the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees is likely to be the most highly anticipated congressional hearing in years, particularly given Mueller’s resolute silence throughout his two-year investigation into Russian contacts with President Donald Trump’s campaign. Mueller never responded to angry, public attacks from Trump, nor did he ever personally join his prosecutors in court or make announcements of criminal charges from the team.

His sole public statement came from the Justice Department podium last month as he announced his departure, when he sought to explain his decision to not indict Trump or to accuse him of criminal conduct. He also put lawmakers on notice that he did not ever intend to say more than what he put in the 448-page report.

“We chose those words carefully and the work speaks for itself,” Mueller said May 29. “I would not provide information beyond what is already public in any appearance before Congress.”

Those remarks did little to settle the demands for his testimony. The two committees continued negotiations that had already been going on for weeks, saying they still wanted to hear from Mueller no matter how reluctant he was.

“When you accept the role of special counsel in one of the most significant investigations in modern history you’re going to have to expect that you’re going to be asked to come and testify before Congress,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told reporters shortly after the announcement.

Trump himself simply tweeted, “Presidential Harassment!”

In the report issued in April, Mueller concluded there was not enough evidence to establish a conspiracy between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia, which was the original question that started the investigation. But he also said he could not exonerate Trump on obstruction of justice. The report examined several episodes in which Trump attempted to influence the investigation.

Democrats say it is now the job of Congress to assess the report’s findings. Lawmakers are likely to confront Mueller on why he did not come to a firm conclusion on obstruction of justice. They are also likely to seek his reaction to a drumbeat of incessant criticism from the president and ask for his personal opinion about whether Trump would have been charged were he not the commander-in-chief.

Schiff and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said they issued the subpoenas Tuesday, and Mueller agreed to testify pursuant to those subpoenas. In a letter to Mueller accompanying the subpoenas, the committee chairmen said “the American public deserves to hear directly from you about your investigation and conclusions.”

Schiff said there will be two hearings “back to back,” one for each committee, and they will also meet with Mueller’s staff in closed session afterward.

The Justice Department declined to comment.

Republicans have criticized Democrats for their continuing investigations of the president. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., questioned why they would still want to hear from Mueller after the lengthy report was issued. “He said he didn’t want to talk to us anymore, didn’t he?”

But Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican on the Judiciary panel, has said he has no objections to Mueller’s testimony.

“May this testimony bring to House Democrats the closure that the rest of America has enjoyed for months, and may it enable them to return to the business of legislating,” Collins said.____Associated Press writer Michael Balsamo contributed to this report.

Head Of Instagram Says Ads Appear By ‘Dumb Luck’ Not By Eavesdropping

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — If you’ve ever wondered if Instagram can hear your conversations after seeing an advertisement for something you’ve only talked about, you’re not alone.

The head of Instagram is now insisting that any rumors of the app eavesdropping on conversations are simply not true.

Instagram’s Adam Mosseri sat down with CBS This Morning’s Gayle King to explain how Instagram ads show up on feeds.

“One is dumb luck…the second is you might be talking about something because it’s top of mind; because you’ve been interacting with that kind of content more recently,” Mosseri explained.

According to cyber experts, online users are data-mined on almost everything they post, share, like, and search for online.

Google reportedly has trackers on 76% of websites, while Facebook monitors 23% of sites.

Mosseri insists that Instagram is not spying on users and that listening to conversations is problematic for many different reasons.

‘It Looks Like A Dump:’ Long Beach Cemetery May Close Gates As Negotiations Stall With City

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — A Long Beach cemetery has announced plans to shut its gates if a deal cannot be reached with the city to purchase the property, leaving families with questions about the future of their deceased loved ones.

Sixteen thousand people have been buried at Sunnyside Cemetery since it opened in 1906, including the town’s first mayor and the first officer killed in the line of duty in 1912. Plots are no longer available.

Christina Williams walked carefully among the headstones, trying not to stumble into gopher holes dotting the yellow lawn as she visited the graves of her father and two brothers.

“You’re supposed to respect the dead. This is awful,” she said. “It looks like a dump … with headstones.”

Sunnyside overcame a financial disaster in mid-90s, when then-owner stole nearly half of a $1 million dollar endowment and spent it on a Mercedes, bar bills and trips, reports CBS2/KCAL9’s Dave Lopez. According to Williams, it was about three years ago when everything went south.

The owners of the cemetery, run by a board of directors, have for years tried to sell the property to the City of Long Beach, which owns and operates a cemetery just next door. Now, the board has announced plans to shut the gates on August 31st unless a deal is reached with the city, leaving loved ones like Williams dismayed.

Lopez reports the state is expected to take over and find an owner in the event no deal is reached.

Amoeba Music To Relocate After Demolition, Plans To Acquire Dispensary License

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA) — Popular music store Amoeba Music will be demolished and replaced with an apartment complex, but the store plans to reopen nearby with new additions to their merchandise.

According to the LA Times, Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to approve zoning that that will allow the development of a 26-story complex at the corner of Sunset and Cahuenga Boulevard where Amoeba Music is currently located.

The building, which opened as the music store in 2001, was sold to developer GPI Companies in 2015 for $34 million.

“Amoeba has every intention of remaining in L.A.,” Amoeba’s Jim Henderson told The Times in 2017. “Rest assured, we are NOT closing, but we are now in a position where we may have to change locations in the coming years.”

According to Variety, Amoeba Music’s co-owner, Marc Weinstein said in 2018 that Amoeba’s L.A. store will move to a new location “within blocks” of its current spot on 6400 Sunset Boulevard.

Alongside the move, Amoeba has announced plans to acquire a dispensary license at the new location, wherever that may be.

In 2018, Amoeba’s Berkeley location opened Hi-Fidelity, the companies first marijuana dispensary.

The addition of marijuana sales was reported by the Times to diversify “profit streams in a music retail landscape that has been on a steady decline since the rise of downloadable digital files in the late 1990s.”

Weinstein reported to Variety that wherever the new location ends up, they will “be diligent” in securing the necessary permits from the city of Los Angeles for its own dispensary.

Although a revival in vinyl sales and annual events such as Record Store Day have helped sales at brick and mortar music stores, it has not helped sales enough to help counteract the steady decline of compact disc sales.

According to a 2018 market report by industry analyst BuzzAngle, CD sales in 2018 fell by 18.5% over the year prior.

Wherever the new location for the beloved store ends up, music lovers in Los Angeles can rest assured that they will still be able to get their hands on their favorite albums.

San Bernardino Boy, 12, Dies After Being Accidentally Shot By Twin Brother; Mother Arrested

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — The mother of a 12-year-old boy who was accidentally shot and killed by his twin brother at their San Bernardino home Monday night has been arrested.

Gabriela Keeton. (San Bernardino Police Department)

Police were called to the 900 block of East Central Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Monday on the report of a shooting. Arriving officers found a 12-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

The child was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The boy’s name has not been released.

A police spokesperson told CBS2 the two brothers were playing with an unloaded and unsecured gun in the master bedroom of the home with ammunition nearby. At some point, the gun was loaded and one of the brothers pretended to shoot the other when the gun went off, police said. It is being considered an accident.

The mother of the children, 45-year-old Gabriela Keeton, was later contacted at the scene and was taken into custody on child endangerment charges. She is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to make her first court appearance Thursday.

The boys’ father was not home when the shooting occurred, police said. At the time, he happened to be hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition.

Sean Anderson, who works a few blocks from the home, wondered why the boys were even handling the firearm.

“They know that’s a no-no, they know it’s bad,” he said. “They know an adult is supposed to hold it or carry it if there is any danger, you know.”

The police department reminds gun owners that firearms should be locked, secured and out of reach of children.

10 Years Later, Death Of Michael Jackson A Continuing Tragedy, Controversy

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The life of Michael Jackson was already complicated, but 10 years after his death, the pop star’s legacy has become even more controversial.

Fans flocked to Forest Lawn in Glendale Tuesday, where the singer dubbed the “King of Pop” was buried after his sudden death on June 25, 2009. A group of super fans, which has been organizing a large display of flowers in honor of the King of Pop annually, coordinated an especially large memorial of red and white roses in honor of this year’s 10th anniversary of his death.

Jackson died on June 25, 2009, sending shockwaves through the entertainment industry and beyond, even eclipsing the death of TV star Farrah Fawcett earlier the same day. Jackson, who had been preparing to go out on another world tour, was pronounced dead at his rented Holmby Hills estate of a propofol overdose, administered by the very doctor he had hired to keep watch over him and help him sleep.

Fans congregated at Jackson’s burial site and his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the TCL Chinese Theater in honor of the singer’s legacy.

“Ten years ago today, the world lost a gifted artist and extraordinary humanitarian,” a statement released from Jackson’s estate said. “A decade later, Michael Jackson is still with us… he is more important than ever.”

Jackson achieved worldwide fame and acclaim as a singer and entertainer. In life, he had 16 No. 1 singles and eight No. 1 albums, and “Thriller” is the only music video to be inducted into the National Film Registry, his estate noted.

But even at the pinnacle of his career, Jackson has been dogged by accusations of child molestation. He was charged in 1993 and again in 2005, but never convicted. He reached an out-of-court settlement for $23 million dollars with the family of the boy who accused him in 1993.

Those accusations resurfaced again earlier this year, with the release of the HBO documentary “Finding Neverland.” Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who both testified on behalf of the singer in the 1993 trial, claimed in the documentary that Jackson sexually abused them when they were children. The Jackson estate condemned the documentary, but the damage was done – radio stations around the world pulled Michael Jackson’s music from their playlists.

“The specificity and sort of how harrowing those accusations are over a long period of time are really devastating. So I think it sort of dirties the water a lot,” Variety’s Matt Donnelly said in an interview.

Woman Loses $2,000 In Devious Scam That Uses Texts Disguised As Bank Alerts

20

But once Terrell punched in that PIN number “Kevin” had access to her account and started to steal her money.Terrell said she immediately texted “no” back and then received a phone call within minutes from “Kevin at BB&T.” He told Terrell that it appeared someone was trying to use her card at a Publix, but that BB&T caught it and card would be frozen.
“He transferred money from my savings account into my checking account and started buying stuff,” said Terrell.
“They (BB&T) sent me an alert but I didn’t notice it because my phone was blowing up,” said Terrell. “I received more than 150 messages in like 20 minutes, now I know why.”
“It was basically a question asking if I spent like ,900 at a Publix,” Terrell told CBS affiliate WFMY.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (CBS Local) — A North Carolina woman says she was recently tricked out of ,000 in a scam that experts say could happen to just about anybody who has money in a bank.
But after “Kevin” began asking her a series of questions, she became suspicious.
Terrell didn’t know it at the time, but she had become a victim of “spoofing” — a technique that scammers use to falsify the number that shows up on caller ID to make the call appear legitimate and trick someone into giving away valuable personal information. Candice Terrell said she was just about to go on vacation when she received what appeared to be a text from her bank about possible fraudulent activity on her debit card.
At some point during the conversation with “Kevin,” BB&T noticed the fraud taking place and emailed Terrell about the unusual activity on her card. But “Kevin” was ready for that possibility and was bombarding Terrell with random emails to distract her from seeing BB&T’s alert.
The bank told WFMY that while it will text customers about potentially fraudulent activity, it won’t ask customers to verify their one-time passcode, PIN, password or online banking credentials in an unsolicited phone call or text.
BB&T would not confirm how many people have been victimized, but Terrell has been told all her money will be reimbursed.
“Kevin” told her to Google the phone number displayed on caller ID display and it matched the main number for BB&T.
Terrell thought her money was safe but then got a new text from BB&T that her account was overdrawn. She called the bank and learned she and at least three other BB&T customers had been scammed in a similar fashion.
Having gained her trust, “Kevin” then told Terrell she would be transferred to a different line where she would key in her PIN number to freeze that account and then he would come back on the line to set up the new account.
“I was glad he was helping,” said Terrell.
“I said ‘Kevin, I hope you don’t take this personally but how do I know you’re with BB&T,’” said Terrell.

LADWP Announces Construction Project Closures On Sunset Boulevard

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power announced sections of Sunset Boulevard would close starting today in order to improve electric system reliability and capacity.

The closures will be on Sunset Boulevard from the 405 Freeway to Bellagio Road and from South Beverly Glen to Carolwood Drive. The road closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. According to LADWP, at least one lane will remain open in each direction to maintain both and eastbound and westbound traffic flow.

Hours may be extended as needed, but at the end of the work day, all lanes will reopen, a statement by LADWP said.

The project is expected to improve capacity and reliability for the communities of Bel Air, Beverly Crest, northern Westwood and Holmby Hills by installing four new underground circuits.

“Serving our customers is always our top priority,” Martin L. Adams, LADWP chief operating officer said. “The circuits servicing these communities are operating at 120% of capacity and adding new circuits is necessary to continue to provide the highest quality service possible. We have worked very hard to minimize the impact this project will have and we are deeply appreciative of your patience, cooperation and understanding.”

LADWP said it worked with local residents and District 5 Councilman Paul Koretz to minimize the effects of the project and has coordinated with local agencies to manage traffic, monitor local access to the work area and maintain fire and emergency access throughout the course of the project.

The project is expected to last for a year.

Jury Recommends Death For Man Convicted Of Killing McStay Family

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — A jury Monday recommended death for the man convicted of killing Joseph and Summer McStay along with their two children before burying the bodies in the Mojave Desert.

The same jury earlier this month found Charles “Chase” Merritt, 62, guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in the death of the McStays and their two young sons.

The San Bernardino jurors recommended Merritt face death in the slayings of Summer McStay and the two boys, 4-year-old Gianni and 3-year-old Joseph Jr., and life without the possibility of parole in the killing of Joseph McStay, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times.

The McStay family vanished suddenly in February 2010 from their Fallbrook home, with bowls of popcorn left uneaten in their house and no sign an attacker forced their way inside. Their bodies were found in November 2013 by an off-road motorcyclist about 100 miles away in shallow desert graves in a desert area just north of Victorville in San Bernardino County.

Merritt was arrested in November of 2014. Authorities say Merritt killed the family with a sledgehammer after his business associate, 40-year-old Joseph McStay, tried to cut him out of a business making and selling custom water fountains.

Many questions remain about the killings, but prosecutors argued that evidence from the family’s car, financial accounts and cellphone towers linked Merritt to the deaths of the McStays.

While Governor Gavin Newsom has placed a moratorium on executions while he’s in office, defendants can still be sentenced to death.

Merritt is due back in court in September for sentencing.

Santa Margarita’s boys athletics program wins Commissioner’s Cup

Santa Margarita’s boys athletics program won the CIF-Southern Section Commissioner’s Cup that is awarded annually to the top overall sports programs in the section.

It is the fourth time the Eagles boys athletics program has won the Commissioner’s Cup since the Cup was first awarded at the end of the 1991-92 school year.

Commissioner’s Cup winners are selected via a points system that awards five points for a divisional championship, three points for a runnerup finish, two points for advancing to the semifinals or third-place finish in a team-place sport (cross country, golf, swimming and diving and track and field) and one point for a fourth-place finish in a team-place sport. Tiebreaker criteria are in place.

Santa Margarita’s boys program had 18 points to edge Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (18). Servite was third at 15 points. Other Orange County boys programs that finished in the top 10 are Mater Dei (No. 4); Newport Harbor (No. 7); and University (No. 9).

Santa Margarita’s girls program was second to Roosevelt of Eastvale. Both had 14 points but Roosevelt won via tiebreaker.

Laguna Beach finished at No. 4.

Santa Margarita has the most Commissioner’s Cups in Orange County, with seven on the girls side and four on the boys side.

Dodgers To Extend Netting After Fan Is Hospitalized After Being Struck By Foul Ball

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The Dodgers will be extending the protective netting along the right and left foul lines at Dodger Stadium, officials confirmed Monday.

The announcement comes a day after 13-year-old Kaitlyn Salazar was struck in the head by a foul ball batted by Dodgers star Cody Bellinger during the first inning of Sunday’s game.

Salazar was sitting four rows back from the field and just beyond the edge of the protective netting that extends to the end of the visiting dugout when she was struck by a line-drive off Bellinger’s bat.

Bellinger checked on her between innings as she sat at her seat with an ice pack on her head.

She was later taken to the hospital for precautionary tests and her mother told CBSLA that doctors confirmed she suffered a concussion.

The family says they have received criticism from people speculating that Salazar was on her phone or distracted when the ball hit her.

According to her family, she was getting up to go to the restroom when she was struck.

“I took a few steps and that’s when it happened and I fell on top of my dad,” Salazar told CBSLA reporter Nicole Comstock.

Salazar described the moment she was hit: “You know in movies when a bomb goes off and you hear ringing and the room gets black and everything sounds muffled? Yeah, that.”

Salazar’s mother, Roxie Salazar, said, “We were in the zone where fly balls happen so yes, you have to be cognizant but at the same time, you’re there to have fun so it’s a catch-22.”

The family said they want management to take a good look at their safety measures.

Just last year, a 79-year-old woman died four days after being struck in the head by a foul ball at Dodger Stadium.

The netting at Dodger Stadium extends to reach the edge of each dugout, but after Sunday’s accident, stadium officials say plans to extend the netting even further are in the works.

The Dodgers say there will be more information on when the extension will be done and exactly where the new netting will be extended to.

The Dodgers issued the following statement Monday regarding the extension of netting at Dodger Stadium: “Fan safety is of the utmost importance to the Dodgers and during the offseason, we began the process of studying how the netting at Dodger Stadium could be configured to provide better protection for our fans. Once this study is completed, the team will implement the recommended changes and extend the netting at Dodger Stadium. The team will provide more information on the project timeline and scope when available.”
