CYPRESS – Laguna Beach and Cypress didn’t have much trouble defeating their respective opponents in the early rounds of the CIF-SS Division 3 girls volleyball playoffs.

Then the Breakers, who are ranked No. 3 in the division, and the Centurions matched up against each other in a Division 3 semifinal on Saturday at Cypress High School and it took five sets to decide the winner.

After losing the first two sets, Laguna Beach won the next three, including a close fifth set, to defeat the Centurions 21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-12.

The Breakers (18-12) will play No. 1-seeded Village Christian in the Division 3 final on Saturday, Nov. 3 at a site to be determined.

Laguna Beach appeared a bit out of sync in the first two sets, but from the third set on, the Breakers made fewer mistakes and their kills were more well placed and sharper.

A pair of juniors, Cambria Hall and Piper Naess, led the Breakers with 23 and 22 kills respectively.

“Our serving was a little off the first or second game,” Naess said. “When we got to the third game, we kind of picked it up. Also, we really weren’t used to the loudness (in the gym), and we just  kind of knew that it was just going to be this loud the whole entire time, so we tried to stay calm, and I think our calmness kind of helped us.”

Cypress (23-5) won a close first set with a scoring spurt at the end and then went on runs of 15-9 and 6-2 to take the second set.

The Centurions led 7-4 in the third set when Cambria and Naess combined for 11 kills to lead the Breakers’ comeback and extend the match,

Five kills by Naess accounted for five of the Breakers’ first seven points in the fourth set.

Then three kills from Hall and block by Kendall Fraser helped the Breakers take a 17-7 lead and eventually win the set.

The Breakers took a 10-4 lead in the fifth set and it appeared as though they would win going away.

Natalie Repetti had two blocks and Danica Glover served an ace to lead to lead an 8-3 run and get the Centurions within a point at 13-12. But the Centurions hit the ball out of bounds on the next two plays, ending the match.

Gwen Russell led the Centurions with 17 kills and Molly Grace finished with 14 kills.

“I think in girls volleyball, momentum is a huge factor,” Cypress coach Alex Griffiths said. “So us winning the first two and not kind closing the deal … giving them that wave of momentum was kind of a game changer for us. Unfortunately, we didn’t’ handle our job and they capitalized on it.”
