LOS ALAMITOS — Mater Dei earned the third seed for the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 football playoffs as expected Sunday, placing the Monarchs on the same side of an intriguing bracket with Centennial of Corona and helping highlight the postseason pairings for Orange County.
Corona del Mar (Division 4) and Katella (Division 8) claimed No. 1 seeds while eight county teams picked up at-large berths to the playoffs, which start Friday. Katella (10-0) captured the Division 13 title last season.
Ocean View (9-1) grabbed one of the at-large berths in an anticipated Division 11 bracket after finishing in a three-way tie for first with Western and Laguna Beach in the Pac 4 League. The Seahawks play at Irvine (4-6) in the first round Friday.
Mater Dei (8-2 including one forfeit) opens Friday at Valencia of Valencia (7-3), the narrow Division 2 runner-up last season to Oaks Christian.
Trinity League champion St. John Bosco (10-0) is the No. 1 seed in Division 1, and Centennial (10-0) is the second seed. The division features a strong rematch theme, including a duel between host San Clemente and Murrieta Valley in the first round. The Nighthawks beat the Tritons 55-38 in Murrieta earlier this season.
