Summer never stops in Palm Springs. With 360 days of sunshine, you can do it all outside – from hiking and biking to alfresco dining to meeting exotic animals. Fall is the return of the low desert’s peak season with annual architecture events and Pride festivals. If hiking or biking is more your game, there’s plenty of that too. Of course, pool-time is anytime in Palm Springs!
Midcentury Marvels
A prelude to the full event in February, Modernism Week Fall Preview October 17-20 offers architecture aficionados a sneak peek of what’s ahead during four days of home tours, mixology tastings, and antique car shows. The Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour is a great way to see many historic neighborhoods in under three hours. Also opening their doors are Sunnylands Historic House, Frey House II, and Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate. Looming with Hollywood lore, the 1947 Sinatra estate in the Movie Colony Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Tickets are on sale now.
Wild Family Fun
More than 450 exotic animals like giraffes, cheetahs and zebras call The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens home. Fall ushers in a stampede of events including Safari Nights and Howl-O-Ween that’s fun for the whole family. With geographical wonders to explore like the beautiful botanical gardens or the interactive Discovery Center, you can have a rip-roaring time with wildlife.
Hike & Bike
There are miles of scenic trails that line the desert, but if you only have time for one, head to Tahquitz Canyon on the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reservation. Leave your flip-flops at the pool because you’ll want solid footing to climb 350 feet up a rocky path. At the end, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning 60-foot waterfall. Biking is another way to peddle through Palm Springs. Downtown streets are bike-friendly with designated lanes to stop, shop and eat at your leisure. Bike Palm Springs Rentals offers standard pedal, electric, and kids’ cycles to rent for a few hours or all week.
Show Your Pride
Palm Springs takes great pride in being an inclusive community. Fall is a fun time to celebrate diversity with LGBTQ festivals, including Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival September 19-22 and Greater Palm Springs Pride November 1-4. In between events, mix and mingle in the restaurants, bars and shops along Arenas Road where rainbow flags fly high welcoming all visitors.
Dining Alfresco
Whether you’re looking for an intimate dinner for two under the stars or a lively spot to people-watch on the sidewalk, outdoor dining is a desert delight. Patios fill up in the fall, but you don’t necessarily need a reservation to enjoy happy hour cocktails or a delicious meal. Nestled at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, LuLu California Bistro in downtown and Trio in trendy Uptown attracts casual crowds of passers-by. Whatever mood for food you’re in, there’s an open-air table for you.
